According to the speaker, the way people look, dress and act give us more information about their attitudes and interests, and we can deeply learn about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people. However, to some extent, we cannot accurately and deeply know people's attitudes and interests not to mention society's ideas and values only according to their appearance and behavior.
Admittedly, more often than not, the way people dress, look, and act are the illustration of their mind. For instance, the general preference of dressing sportswear which can let people do sports any time reveals that this people love sports and care more about their health. People's look can let you know their attitudes toward things, you can see angry in the face of people who suffer unjustness or discrimination. And people will show great passion when they do their interests. Besides, since society is made up of people, we can tell much about ideas and values of a society by study their people. For example, a society whose members have various interests and hobbies must be a free and democratic society. A society whose family members prefer to live together is a society place high value on tradition and family.
However, in other respects【aspects】, people cannot accurately learn about a person only by observing his/her look, dress and act. Consider, for example, in some Islamic and Arab countries, women have to keep them behind the black veil. We cannot see their face not to mention that learn about their attitudes and interest. 【这个例子还可以用来说明 人们的外表可以显示出社会的价值观--在这里就是歧视女性的价值观】In other respects【aspects；respects不是尊敬的意思么】, for some special works, such as police and soldier, who must dress unified. And for some special fields, such as the research of atomic power, people must dress protecting dressing. Moreover, some people do not care about their external appearance, and their primacy concern is their business. For example, Einstein always forgets cut hair and dress like a poor man. At the first glance of him, no one would think he is a great scientist. So it does not always work for us to judge people according to their external things. Besides, some behavior is not actual reflections of people's attitudes and interest, the charity and benevolence made by a politician cannot indicate that he/she is kindness since they do that is only for the votes.
In addition, it is insufficient to learn about the values and ideas only through appearance and behavior of people. Since people's interests and behaviors are difference and various, complete and accurate understanding of people's attitude and values will require observer do a great amount of work. Moreover, since the culture, experience, knowledge of observer is difference, distinct observer will make distinct conclusion about same society. Thus, we cannot understand ideas and values of a society only through people's attitudes and behaviors.
To sum up, we
learn about
a society's values and ideas by observe its members' appearance and attitude. Nevertheless, in some aspects, it is insufficient to understand a society only through people's external things. We should also understand its culture, tradition, rituals and discuss with other people if we want to objectively and deeply learn about a society.
