50"In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."
The speaker alleges that if all college and university faculty spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to their academic fields, the quality of instruction at the college and university could be improved.Although there might be some merits to encourage the facultyto work outside academia, the feasibility of statement should be doubted.
The world around us presents a seamless web of scientific progress, some academic subjects have a enormous development during these years. In order to improve the quality of university's education, itis necessary to urge faculty to keep abreast with the cutting edge of science. Workshop experiencecan really enrich the subjects in classroom. This is especially true for such objects as engineering, manufacturing, economics and so forth.
But such cases by no means to indicate that bridging workshops and classrooms can always play magic. It is lack feasibility to improve the quality of education by connecting the classroom with workoutside academia. It is especially true for some subjects, such as theoretical physics and some mathematical researchers. For example, there is neither necessary nor possible for the researchers in these areas to directly apply their knowledge to practical work. These science seems to perform well within the brain cells.
In addition, according the speaker's assertion, the education's quality could not develop unless every individual subject and its faculty be involved in working outside academia, which relevant totheir professional fields. It is not hard to imagine that some subjects, more abstractive ones, such as philosophy, theoretical physics and mathematics, probably would be stop developing, because compared to experience of work outside academia, what these subjects need is sufficient imagination and discretion.
Moreover, except work outside academia, there are many avenues to let faculty to hold pace with the present state of science. For example, nowadays one of the effective ways to grasp the most fresh scientific progress is to attend the academic symposium, the college faculty can attend academicsymposiums which relevant to their professional fieldsto comprehend what the latest developments are. Furthermore, throughout the world, information and telecommunication technologies bringing about a new revolution——Internet, since the day which Internet has tied up the whole world, people who come from pole and pole can share the information anywhere and anytime.
Aside from those measures, there are many alters can be chose as methods to improve theteaching quality, such as long-term academic accumulation, the sufficient teaching facilities, the free and tolerant academic atmosphere, and the good-triming birth of geniuses and so forth.
In sum, though real world experience contributes to the teaching quality of some subjects, it is not suitable for all the subjects. In the fields which are more abstractive, spending more time on working outside academia is neither helpful nor feasibility. |
