In the recent year, there is a general controversyover the issue that weather broad knowledge of many academic subjects is betterthan specialize on one specific subject. Although some people claim that it ismore practical to focus on one specific subject. Personally, I prefer to have comprehensiveknowledge and I will provide concrete evidences to demonstrate my point ofview.
First and foremost, the ultimate purpose of educationis to cultivate students with an overall education background, which means thatthey should learn many general curricula. Along with the rapid development ofmodern society, the needs for all-round talents increased largely. In fact, wecan learn many of the basic skills through taking some subjects. For instance, from the PE class, students could know how to corporate as well as compete withcoworkers. In the math class, they could acquire a logical thinking ability. Inthe foreign language class, they can master a new language, meanwhile enhancetheir communication capacity. What is more, through attending certain liberalarts courses, such as history, literature, philosophy and humanity, they couldbuild an integrated value system and moral standard. Accordingly, after acceptmany subjects, it is obvious that student will more likely to become aqualified citizen in the future, which meet the final goal of education.
In the second place, general education will promotepeople to do better on their own jobs. Nowadays, the relation cross disciplinesis much more close than ever before, people should master something outside theirfield to handle even their tasks. Take the clinical medicine as an example. Itis true that doctors are responsible to deal with the physical problems of thepatient, but this is to some extent based on if the doctor have helped themincrease confidence to confront the trouble and overcome the disease at last.At this level, knowledge of specific doctor should go beyond the simple medicalscope, but include something in psychology. Only in this way, can you cure thedisease of patients successfully.
Last but not least, limiting scope on one specificarea will prevent people from handling the difficulty. For instance, how can acardiologist who knows nothing else besides his own realm to cure his patients, since it is universally acknowledged that human body is an integrated system, each organ relates closely with other ones.
To sum up, taking into account of the discussionmentioned above, we may safely reach the conclusion that it is wise andreasonable to study many academic subjects rather than only specialize on oneparticular subject.
