160 "The most essential quality of an effective leader is the ability to remain consistently committed to particular principles and objectives. Any leader who is quickly and easily influenced by shifts in popular opinion will accomplish little."
With the hourly changes of political and economical situations in today's society, should leaders stick to their original strategies? Will people welcome the frequent shifts in policies? As far as i am concerned, I agree with the statement insofar as persistence in particular principles and objectives is a virtue of leaders. However, to become an effective leader, vision is more essential than consistence. Besides, shifts are sometimes necessary in order to keep efficiency.
To start with, it plays an indispensable role for leaders to commit to certain goals and principles. On the one hand, their persistence helps to establish an reliable public image which partly insures their leadership. Considering political leaders who are elected for their commitment to abolish the old policies and to establish new ones to bring more interests to people in all walks of life, they would be depicted as untrustable and lose the approval of electorates when competing for the next term if they failed to stick to the goals they swore in the campaign speech. On the other hand, frequent alterations in policies harms the stability of the group or society because to adapt to the leaders' change of mind, each hierarchy has to be remodeled. Assuming if google suddenly abolished their long-term plan to expand their business in China, thousands of positions must be re-arranged for the employees recalled back from Chinese market, which would undoubtedly bring dramatic personnel changes in branches all around the world since a single branch has no capacity to absorb all of them.
Secondly, to maintain effectiveness in leadership, foresight of leaders far outweighs their consistence to policies. It is the long term vision that enables leaders to stick to their original plans or principles confidently with the firm belief that they are on the right course. In a word, foresight is a pre-requisite for leaders to steadily commit to their strategies and get final success. For instance, Paul Jobs, the CEO of Apple Computer, refuted some contrary views in the company and set the pursuit of aesthetic value as a goal of their design in the 1980s, holding the far-sight that only technology combined with visual enjoyment could meet people's needs in the future. And in the 2000s the great success of ipods and macs proved that Jobs' consistence years ago was right, of course on the basis of his long-term vision.
However, despite the positive effects of commitment to them as discussed above, shifts in policies are required under urgent circumstances. To avoid crisis or to adapt to new situations, leaders are expected to make some expedients or totally change the original strategy when taking into consideration the interests of the whole group. History is laden with such examples where the leaders' alteration in policies proved to be the turning points of final success. What comes into mind immediately is the changes in the military plan of Chairman Mao during the Emancipation War. After the army was severely damaged in battles in cities, his decision to shift the strategy from occupying cities first to occupying countries first helped the army to recover from the crisis. Supposing if Mao had insisted on the former plan which did not suit the harsh situation at that time, his army might have been annihilated soon, let alone the eventual success they achieved in the war.
For the analysis above, on most occasions it is desirable for leaders to stick to policies and goals as long as they work out them with foresight originally. Meanwhile, when changes in conditions and environment occurred, leaders ought to re-evaluate the policies and make proper shifts to help his team go through plights. Otherwise his obstinacy may result to the sacrifice of overall interests.
