reading notes:
1. fossial in polar
    only...
2.run-- leg -- under body
3.  include...
  canals--- grow---fact ...

listening notes:
1. polar more warm than today
  warm-- not to live
live in cold X migrate to warm
2. X high energy
body support more weight --- large size... adv.
so X run

my writing:

In the lecture, the professor argues that the opinions listed in the passage can not prove the dinosaurs are endotherms. Her opposite opinions are as follows.

To begin with, the polar regions where the so-called polar dinosaurs were found are warmer than today, and the dinosaurs which lived in cold place were unable to migrate to warm place. Thus, the professor challenges the view in the passage that animals can maintain body temperature in cold weather.

In addition, dinosaurs are not high engery for running, and their underneath leg’s are to support more weight so that they can grow into large size. On the contrary, the passage says their leg position and physical activity indicate dinosaurs are endotherms.(逻辑关系没太明白..

Finally, the professor admits the dinosaurs do have Haversian canals, but they also have growth ring. However, their growth rings are the evident that they stop growing during cold period then have slow growth, rapid growth. Which is different from the view that the Haversian canals indicate the animal is an endotherm in the passage.(几个growth直接的连接关系没记住。)

In sum, the professor presents the three opposite opinions to prove that the dinosaurs are not endotherms.

TPO-4

The reading passage is mainly discussing the evidences that dinosaurs were endotherms. However, in the listening material, the speaker points out that the dinosaurs were not endotherms.

Firstly, the speaker supports that the Polar Regions were warmer than today.<Even the Polar Regins, where the dinosaur fossils have been found, were much warmer than today> So endotherms cannot live.<Warm enough during that part of year for animals that were not Endotherms to live.> And during that certain period, Polar Regions were cold, and the so-called polar dinosaurs could have to migrate to warmer areas, like many <modern> reptiles do. So the fossils they found cannot prove that dinosaurs were endotherms. In the contrast, the reading passage thinks that dinosaur fossils have been discovered in Polar Regions and only animals that can maintain a temperature well above that of the surrounding environment could be active in such cold climates.

Secondly, the speaker supports that dinosaurs were not <necessarily mean endotherms were high energy endotherms build for running> high endotherms that build for running. Another explanation <for having legs under their body> is that dinosaurs have body structure and it can support the dinosaurs’<more> weight. Dinosaurs can grow to a large size that does not need leg<the idea that endotherms in running to explain donodsaurs involved their legs under their body>. While the reading passage said that legs of all modern endotherms are underneath the body, so were the legs of dinosaurs. So it suggests that dinosaurs were endotherms.

Finally, the speaker raises the issue that dinosaurs have bone structure. <dinosaur bone has grow **.Grow ** are ** of the bone that indicate the time that dinosaurs were rapidly growing> Dinosaurs’ grow rate suggests that dinosaurs cannot grow rapidly. When the climate was cooler, they grow slow or did not grow. From grow slow and did not grow to grow fast is not the character of endotherms. <Animals that have constant tempreture all the year around as true endotherms do grow rapidly even when the environment becomes cool>Endotherms still can grow rapidly when climate was cooler. But the reading passage thinks that the presence of Haversian canals in bone is a strong indicator that the animal is an endotherm, and fossilized bones of dinosaurs are usually dense with Haversian canals.

So the contents in the reading passage are totally jeopardized by the speaker and speaker has totally different ideas on the topics made in the reading.

TPO4 By Fatrui
The reading passage argues that dinosaurs are endotherms however this statement called into question by some scientists. And then professor lists three reasons to demonstrate scientists' opinion

At the first place, even there are fossils of dinosaur had been found in polar area, professor said that still cannot prove the dinosaurs is endotherms ,since long time ago the polar area was warmer than today. Therefore the dinosaur can live in the polar area many years ago. Finally, the climate of polar area suddenly changed. The polar was so cold that the dinosaur cannot migrate immediately. So the scientists can find fossils in polar areaoh no, I’m wrong the lecture said the D migrated to a warmer places or hibernated, how foolish I am

At the second place, the dinosaurs actually have legs under their body, however these do not mean the leg is use to running, in fact, the leg was used to support the huge body of dinosaurs.(this part is too short, I definitely not proof their relationship, I missed high-energy, not say being large had advantages)

Finally, the dinosaurs really have bones structures called Haversian canals, however, the dinosaurs’ growth are not depend on this bones structure. Actually, their growth is relay on "growth ring" which controls the dinosaurs’ growth rate. Growth ring can control the speed of dinosaurs’ growth and make the speed sometimes stop, sometimes slowly or sometimes quickly.(is characteristic of animals that are not E, and E will maintain a constant temperature)

From above what professor asserted, we can know dinosaurs may not endotherms.

TopicD is not endo
Reading
1.fossil in Polar region activecool)所以 endo
2.running ---leg---under body 所以 endo
3.bone structure growth ^ rapidly 所以 endo

Listening
1.
lived Po warmer today can live
cold migrate
2.
not say running
support more weight---large body size not running
3.
growth ring indicate cool growth slow

Reading:
1.        fossils in polar regions
2.        underneath the body
3.        bone is a strong, grow quickly, rapid body growth

Lecture:
1.        polar more warm than today9
2.        running, weight

In this set of materials, the reading passage discusses dinosaurs are endotherms in the certain way. But in the listening lecture, the speaker closely reexamined this theory by presenting a dfferent prespective. She finds that lack of evidence provide that dinosaurs were endotherms which completely challenged the reading passage.

First of all, the speaker raised the issues that animals can maintain body temperature in cold weather. According to her, Polar Regions were warmer than today. On the contrary, the passage rather deviating from the speaker, demonstrate that dinosaur fossils have been discovered in Polar Regions and only animals that can maintain a temperature well above that of the surrounding environment could be active in such cold climates(完全抄原文).

The second point the professor use to refute the reading is that dinosaurs were large animals. She says that their underneath legs are to support their weight. However, this is different from the reading which states that the legs of all modern endotherms are underneath the body, so were the legs of dinosaurs directly contradicting what the lecture indicate.

Moreover, contrary to the belief in passage that the presence of Haversian canals in bone is a strong indicator that the animal is an endotherm. The professor asserts that **.

In sum up, the speaker has totally different opinion on the topic made in the reading.

edotherm(热血动物):

reading:
dinosaurs are endotherm

1. fossils have been discovered in polar regions(这个写错了)

consistant body temp------cold area

2. legs under body--run

3. have Hc--grow quickly---endo(表达不清————没有完全理解)

lecture:
1.polar regions were much warmer than today

even cold--hibernate/migrate to warmer area

2. leg---support body

3. have growth rings-stop growing/grow slowly during cold periods--Dino weren't repidly growing(表达不清————没有完全理解)

The professor uses three points to refute the belief in the reading passage that dinosaurs are endotherms.

First, Contrary to the argument stated in the reading passage that dinosaurs' fossils have been discovered in the cold area(完全理解错误!), the professor says that scientists also find that dinosaurs' fossils are found in warm region(应该是原来那个时代POLA AREA是温暖的), and evident showed that even when it comes to cold season, dinosaurs, like any non endotherm animals today, can migrate or hibernate to warmer area.

Second, the professor challenge the idea in reading passage that dinosaurs' feet located under their bodies because they can provide enough energy to run. However ,this explanation cannot support thoroughly, because professor presents one other possibility , the feet of dinosaurs are used to support their heavy weight.

Finally, the reading passage says that just as most of endotherms, dinosaurs also contain Haversian canals in their bodies, and their quickly growth also is the characteristic of endotherm. But the professor argues that in fact, the evident of grow rings(应该说明虽然Dino是有HC 但同时具有GR)show that dinosaurs are not edotherm, because dino stop growing or growing slowly during the cold period, not always grow quickly,(应该进一步解释GR )

All this information points to whether dinosaur is endothem.

TO SUM UP

2. no trace of corn or corn container

pot—trash

The professor uses three points to refute the idea in the reading passage that Chaco house may be used for settling, storing food, or holding ceremonies.

First, contrary to the reading passage that the structure of Chaco house show similar to the "apartment house" in New Mexico, and the large space in Chaoce house also can give chance to people to live in, the professor states that inside decoration is different from the "apartment house". If they are homes holding lots of people, there must been some fire places for daily cooking. However, there is only one bigfew fire place in the Chaoce house, The largest fire place could only suite the need of ten families. In addition, there is not enough room for more than 100 people . so that it is not reasonable for large amount of family to resident.

Secondly, the professor challenges the idea in the reading passage that the Chaco house is a storage of corn. In fact, there aren't isn't any evident of trace of corn or corn containers.

Finally, the reading passage says that the Chaco house, like Pueblo Atto, can be hold ceremony, because archaeologists found lots of broken pots, which may be threw by people after having festival meal. Nevertheless, the professor argues that other ceremony materials, like sand and stone, also wereweren't found., but only the broken pot. There still exists another explanation thatand these pots sprobably leftover by construction workers. (没听清楚说的是建筑工人扔的,不是参加完节日的人扔的)are trash.

All this information points to Chaco house has controversial using way.

TPO-5
The reading passage supports the idea that archaeologists have been trying to determine how the buildings were used, and provides three competing theories. However, the speaker said that none of them are convincing.

Firstly, the speaker thinks that If Great House was purely residential, so it should have fire places. They are necessary for cooking. But few people have them, and the largest fire place can only suit the need of ten family . While, reading material supports that Great Houses appear strikingly similar to the large, well-known “apartment building” at Taos, in which many people have been living for centuries. <First from the outside, the GH looks like in later native Americans' apratment buidings. But the serious inside house cast on the idea that many people live there /God,这是主题句,我没记下来,我记的都是detail 是它的解释..

Secondly, the speaker believes that if chaco structures were used for store food, that means floors and containers are useless<there is no evidence from the excavation showing trace of trays or large containers of grain maizes.>. But the reading passage hold the view that chaco structure were used for store food and the supplies of maize had to be stored somewhere, and the size of the great house would make them very suitable for the purpose.

Finally, the listening material said that mound was composed of many materials, like sands, stones, constructure tools, but not only the broken pots. In the contrary, the reading passage agrees that exactions of the mound revealed deposits containing a surprisingly large number of broken pots.

To sum up, the ideas that speaker hold are totally different with the reading passage.

The reading passage provides us three competing theories. Meanwhile, professor produces three different opinions to these theories.

At the first, it is true that the Chaco houses are as same as "apartment buildings" at Taos, New Mexico. but when we look inside the house we could find that it is impossible to let Chaco contain hundreds people live in it, since there are not enough fireplace to cook enough food to this mount of people. (every will have a fireplace to cook food every day,but there are just few fireplace)More importantly, there has not enough room for hundreds people to live in.

At the second place, without cover and big container, the house cannot store much maize in house. If have to save huge amount of maize, the maize will on the floor, this doesn't make sense.(but excavations of the great houses have not uncovered many traces of maize)
Finally, there are many building materials like sand and stone in Pueblo Alto besides pot. The reason for why left these building materials here is that the people did not use up all the material when the construct their house and the people threw them out. May be the pot is the same situation as materials. So pots were not used in ceremonies, but were discarded by people who do not used these pots anymore.

From what we talk above, we know that the three theories is seriously called into question by professor opinion.

Reading
1:earlier version of the arch in recent SS ,large 100 人
2:store food,great—》size—》suitable—》long
3:cere,old mterial。Pot—》gather special cere,festival meal

Listening
1:true look loke, inside doubt X,100 live have not fire place—》cook, large 100-fire,not enough room
2:not cover not big container, maize floor
3:materials beside pots FE:building sand stone, not use up,pots—》construct not cere

3.building material, not use ap.
Left the meal of co

In the lecture, the professor cast doubts on the three theories that are talked about in the passage. He insists that the buildings are not used for resident, storing food and ceremonials.

To begin with, the professor admits that the building may look like an apartment building outside, however, inside the building, there are not enough fire places which indicate that the building cannot support hundreds of people. That is contradicting to the passage.

Next, the professor says that there are not any traces of maize container. Though the Chaco people have to store maize, we cannot find evidences to approve the buildings are used to store food supplies. What’s more, why don’t they make big containers for storing?(自己编的,因为笔记内容连不上,似乎有点问题这么写) That’s the professor’s doubt about its use.

Finally, the professor mentions that the houses may be used for storing building materials, since the evidences that the left meal of workers are found which may indicate that the people in the building are working not doing ceremonies. On the contrary, the passage states the left broken pots are the evidence of ceremonies.

Secondly, the lecture chanllege the fact that dinosours running efficiently shows that their legs are positioned underneath their bodies and so does all modern endotherms. The professor argues that this body structure supports more weight and with the legs under body  dinosours can grow to a very large size.
Thirdly, the reading passage states the the presence of Haversian canals in bone shows that the animal is an endotherm and fossilized bones of dinosaurs have Haversian canals. The professor claims that dinosaurs' bones also have growth veins concerns about body growth. Body growth experience this process: no growth , slow growth and rapid growth ,which isnot  the character of endorthermes.

lecture
1,look outside inside doubt     fire place cook  few 10family  no more room for
2, not support exca uncover trace mazie container
3, other materi  building constr     trash  being  meal  constru worker

According to the professor in the lecture, the inside of the “great houses” isn’t serious adopt that there were many people living there. Because if hundreds of people lived there before, there would be many fireplaces for every family’s daily cook. However, in the largest “great houses”, we can find only ten fireplaces which can not be available for so many families. So it couldn’t be residential. This directly contradicts what the reading passage indicates that the “great houses” held a lot of people due to it’s outside looking was familiar with the “apartment building” in New Mexico where many people lived for centuries.
The speaker in the listening argues that if Chaco structure was used for storing maize, there must be some traces of maize, such as some grain on the floor and big containers for carrying maize. But none of the clues appeared, and the speaker also says that it is unbelievable that such a large room only used for maize preservation. This point disagrees with the statement demonstrated in the reading that the “great houses” were used for food supplies, especially grain maize.

In this listening, the professor says that, the pile of old material might be left from some large quantity buildings. This phenomenon is common, when some big projects are finished, some materials which were not used up left, even some construction stuff and tools. And the spots could be some trash for meals and constructions which differs from the reading in that the reading states that “great houses” were for ceremony use, and these spot and waste materials were left after the ceremony.

The passage states that there are some problems in the communal online encyclopedias and it is less valuable. However, the lecture totally disagrees with what are stated in the passage.

First of all, in contrast to the argument stated in the passage that commual online encyclopedias lacks academic credentials, the professor says that traditional encyclopedias have never been close to perfectly accurate. It is easier to correct errors in the commual online encyclopedias than printed encyclopedias.(it’s hardly a fair criticism that encyclopedias online have errors)

Secondly, the lecture contradicts the point made in the passage that hackers have opportunities to change the information. The professor argues that online encyclopedias have a crucial formate that no one can make changes. In addition, some editors monitor the all changes and eliminate the changes.(两个stragegy: 1, nobody disputes in a read-only format;2, editor

Finally, while the passage states that the commual encyclopedias make the people confuse to distinguish the importance of some topices, the lecture maintains a different point of view. The professor says the traditional encyclopedias have limited spaces that they have to decide which is more important. However, with the unlimited spaces, online encyclopedias shows varieties of articles and topics which reflect users’ interests.diversity of use is one of their strongest advantages没听到

In sum, the contents in the reading passage are totally refuted by the lecture and the lecture advocates totally different ideas on the topics made in the reading passage.
