Appearance and the Essence

When encountered a stranger or stepping into an alien place, we tend to open our eyes wide to its potential, seeking primary message about people from appearance. While solely relying on appearance, more often than not, jeopardize our judgment, for appearance doesn't necessarily reveal the essence.


Admittedly, we can gain substantial information about the external world with our eyes. Attempting to learn a person, we pay attention to his dress, behavior, words, and get the first-hand information about his interests and attitudes towards certain issues. Consider, for example, the color and forms of his/her dress and the way he deal with frustrations. In bright color and casual style, one tends to be positive towards the external world, quick to move and sociable; Always hesitating to carry out decisions and usually revealing suspicious, one is probable inward, cautious enough not be harmed, usually lack of self-confidence, and sometimes even be depressive. In the process of learning a people, their appearance and general behavior should never be neglected. Such as, the image of Arabic women is all covered except the eyes, which can easily be explained by their stern politics and religion.

Whereas we may risk misjudging the world and destroying the integrity of our knowledge system, if completely believing the image from eyes. In some cases, the appearance of people cannot efficiently reveal their authentic inward. Say, the great physicist Einstein, is always in an old coat. When asked why not purchase a new one, he responded, "To my acquaintance, why bother; Otherwise, it makes no difference”. Those people prefer humble and low profile to gorgeous appearance, which will occupy their precious time. If judged by dress or appearance, they would surely be classed as the down-and-out, a situation we must avoid by look into it for in-depth knowledge. Sometimes, we should be wary of not be taken in by some other people, who are expert at disguising themselves to profit form the victims. At a national level, with the rapid technology, people everyone tend to dress in same brand, eat the same snack and probable talk the same popular issues , but their values and ideas, which is influenced by both the domestic history and external culture, may be far away.

Since appearance doesn't necessarily reflect the essence, when learning a person, it may be safe to judge after we have obtained enough information about him. As the proverb goes, “time reveals a person’s heart”. we can learn a person better, by know his raising environment, the people he acquaint, abhor or honor, the book he find worth, the music he is crazy about. All those in comprehensive aspects expose one’s nature. The more accurate information we master, the more correct our judgment would be. To know a person is not a easy job, which need to know how he/she experiences happiness, sadness, what he/she behavior when angry and his temperance disclose unintentionally, till we get a complete picture of the person. As to learn a certain people, or a nation, the most important things we should get to know is their culture, their history, even the geography and climate, which may play a role in shaping the value of a nation and its people.

The appearance, look, dress or act of people gives us message in some aspects, merely which is insufficient to get a correct understanding of them. To get a whole picture of them, we had better gain further insight into them by learn its background, such as their culture, history, habits, geography and so on. Limited information easily misguides one and may not reflect the true personality.
