There is much debate over the issue that which is the determinant of the most significant events and trends in history between the famous few and nameless groups of people. On the one hand, some people believe that the key individuals play the leading role in the history. On the other hand, some other people maintain that the development of the society and the progress of the history cannot be realized without the groups of people. In my point of view, whether one has advantages over the other depends on the specific conditions. In the following discussion, I would like to present evidence favoring the former and refuting the latter to support my point of view.
To begin with, I would like to concede that the power of the groups of people cannot be neglected. Without them, no matter how great the leaders are, no reform or campaign could be successful. However, since the mass is consist of many different individuals; it is common that everyone has his own idea and perspective for the future in his mind, so it can be difficult for them to work together without a leader and determining a right direction. If the history were guided by the groups of people, then the route of history would always be easily influenced and changed.
As I said, the key individuals is just like a beacon showing the right way for all of fleets of ships in the dark sea. The groups of people would have faith in the leaders' ideology and completely comply with it which leads to a better teamwork and the access to success. Taking the war of liberation in China as an example, there are many groups of people suffered the torture of the incompetent government who attempted to raise a revolution and all ended up with failure, till the President Mao became the leader of the war. Since then, the groups of people have gained victory many times in many campaigns, for President Mao has carried out effective plans and strategies to fight with the enemy and all groups of people are working as a team carrying the same belief. So it is clear that the power of groups can only be let out completely with the guide of correct ideology.
Furthermore, I would like to make it clear about the function of the history and the purpose for us to learn about it. As I see, the function of the history is recording the details of the past events, as well as acting as an evidence for us to learn from to tackle the obstacles at hand. As for recording, the historians try to search the truth of the past events, the initial intension, the progress, the consequence and the cause in the numberless details in the history. They cannot get the true result from just learning the nameless groups of people regardless the great contribution of the key individuals. When it comes to the learning material part, it is necessary for us to know the importance of the key individuals so that we can decide what should we learn, and by analyzing the history, we can learn the spirits of the leaders which might inspire us to get mature or sophisticated to better fit the contemporary society.
In sum, from my perception, it is essential for us to notice the importance of the "famous few", since they play the leading role in the history. While, admittedly, the power of the groups of people is overwhelming but limited to some extent which would be better used under a wise leadership and guide. |
