Position: it seems obvious that no one can possibly achieve success in the world by conforming to conventional practices and conventional ways of thinking. But we should define the term of success. If you mean success is doing something creative then we cannot succeed merely by conforming to conventional practices and conventional ways of thinking. However, if you mean success is doing something more conventional, such like a crafter, then you will be much successful.
point 1 : If you want to be an artist or scientist, conventional practices and conventional ways of thinking is not enough. argument 1: to be an artist, you must be creative enough to create new piece of work. example: Vegan  argument 2: to be a scientist, you should be creative to find new method. example: Einstein.
