From my perspective, it is of great significance for faculty to work outside in some relevant professions since it would possibly bring enormous benefits for both teachers and students. But teachers should be encouraged to contact with the outside and choose what they are interest in instead of being required. It is not simply a matter of the new way of instruction, but how teachers can better fulfill their obligation.
None can afford to neglect that there are a lot of problems existing in the current educational system which demand prompt solution. First of all, the syllabuses in many colleges and universities fail to meet the demand of the times. Most of them are so out-of-date and monotonous that students often find it difficult to take an interest in. Besides, most of the textbooks are too theoretical to be applied into practice and a majority of teachers lack the practical experience; as a result, many students may get high marks in exams but cannot find a good job after graduation from university. These problems require urgent resolution so that the overall quality of teaching can be raised to a higher level.
One of the solutions to these problems is finding a related job outside school, which would do good to both teachers and students. As for teachers, working outside would stimulate their interest in further study and research, broaden their sight and richen their knowledge, expose them to the leading edge of the development. There is no doubt that professors in colleges and universities ought to own global perspectives to view international events with unique understanding instead of being limited only to his school. Moreover, appropriate outside working could facilitate teachers to put what they learn into practical teaching and better master the development direction of teaching skills. On the other hand, professors are able to design curriculums according to social needs and make the content of courses approaching to students’ tastes or even provide internship opportunities for some excellent students.
As for students, if their teachers maintain a close connection with society, they would possibly learn more about the prospect and developing conditions of their major than other students, thus they could make preparations for their future career in advance. Also, students could further clarify the function of what they learn in social working place, with a clear and meaningful goal, they would be more motivated and diligent in studying.
However, over-emphasis on part-time job would probably lead to detrimental effects. Professors in colleges and universities would be distracted from regular school teaching, if large amounts of time is devoted to working outside school. Without adequate time to study and research, it is very likely that the teaching quality would decline, especially nowadays university faculty are always responsible for many scientific tasks. What’s worse, with part-time jobs, some teachers may divert their focus to outside in order to earn money and disregard their responsibility for students, which would exert harmful influence on the development of students.
In order to maximize the advantages and minimize the drawbacks, teachers should be allowed and encouraged to work outside school instead of being required and forced. They should have the rights to choose suitable jobs; while if there is not, they can also teach wholeheartedly. Working outside is not only a new way of instruction in modern times, but also a choice for faculty to better their teaching methodology. In order to fulfill their obligation as instructors, it is suggested that they could keep pace with the times, update their knowledge structure regularly and enhance their competence.
Ideally, teachers would choose their part-time jobs by their choices, allocated their time properly, thus making achievement in both fields. If so, working outside would not impede regular teaching but promote its development.
