In this set of materials, the reading passage describes three competing theories about how the “great houses” are used. But the professor in the listening passage doesn’t think those theories are convincing. The reasons are as follows.
In the first place, the theory holds that Chaco structures were purely residential is questionable. The lecture argues that if this theory is right, there will be more than one hundred fireplaces in the house, which housing hundreds of people. The truth is that only ten fireplaces were found, which denies the hypothesis of residential using.
In the second place, another theory that takes Chaco structures as using for storing food supplies also has some problems. The lecture holds that it is true that one of the main crops in Chaco was grain maize. If those houses were used for storing grain maize, we should not found other big containers in those places.
In the third place, the theory of proposing that houses were used as ceremonial centers also hasn’t enough evidence. Because apart from finding a large number of broken pots, researchers also found other materials, such as large building, stone, sand and so no, which means those houses were not used as ceremonial centers. There is another possibility that people just throw those things as trash. Broken pots are trash too. So, this theory is also questionable.
In conclusion, according to the listening passage, there is not enough evidence to let us believe in any of those three theories described in the reading passage.

With the development of society, so many ways of entertaining are pouring into people’s life. Everyone can easily find his/her own way to gain personal enjoyment. Some people like to going abroad to experience some kind of foreign culture to pursue happiness, some people choose to chat online about some heated topics to attain enjoyment, others prefer to watching movies, going shopping to relieve themselves, just name a few. Although this is the real case, in my point of view, it is too exaggerating to say that people today spend too much time on personal enjoyment rather than doing things they should do. The reasons are as follows.
First and foremost, there is no definite contradiction between doing things people like and doing things people should do. There are so many things which we should do can give us personal enjoyment and sense of fulfillment. Take studying for example, every student should take English seriously and spend more time on practicing basic skills, such as speaking and writing. Studying English is something the students should do. But we also find that so many students are obsessed with English, myself is an example. Studying English can also give us enjoyment. Another good example in case is that so many people devote to help others, such as YaoMing, helping others is what they should do but also can give them enjoyment.
Another important factor is that people doing things they like to gain personal enjoyment is a good way to relieve their stress in life. After a day’s tedious work, people have a good reason to go to see a movie, or go shopping with friends to relax in order to gain energy for the future work. We cannot simply say that they are spending too much time on personal enjoyment.
Last but not least, pursuing happiness is the essence of human nature. When we choose a job, we hope we can find one that we like to do. When we look for a future husband or wife, we expect we can cultivate a good relationship with him/her. We also hope our parents will be proud of our success and our friends can enjoy the mutual trust in our relationship. All those things we do are to make us enjoy our life.
From what described above we can safely draw a conclusion that, although people are pursuing personal enjoyment when they are doing something, it doesn’t mean they are spend too much time on personal enjoyment rather than doing things they should do.
