【题目】issue153
"Students should bring a certain skepticism to whatever they study. They should question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively."
The fundamental purpose that has been proposed for education is that cultivate students to become responsible, thoughtful, and enterprising citizens. This is an intricate, challenging task requiring students with high study efficiency and great ability to innovate, which call for a balance in which there are both skeptic and accepter.

The fundamental purpose that has been proposed for education is that cultivate students to become responsible, thoughtful, and enterprising citizens. This is an intricate, challenging task requiring students with high study efficiency and great ability to innovate, which call for a balance in which there are both skepticism and rote learning.
Skepticism is necessary in order to allow students to acquire and apply mass new information and knowledge. Being skeptic is not a radical way to mechanical or habitual repetition of something, but a new process to disclose the truth. It is important to keep our minds open to new ideas, and to prevent us from becoming unthinking dogmatists with no individuality. If there were no one in the world to doubt, then we’ll still believe the world is flat and science would never exist.
Additionally, without skeptics, students would find themselves bogged down in the Sargasso Sea of information overload. Society changes faster than ever before thus what is learned when we are young is fast outdated. So this need for a kind of ability to learn and apply new knowledge and skills, which student can gain from the processes that question what they taught. It is of particular importance to cultivate their critical thinking skills so that by the time they face a problem which has no definite and correct answer, their minds won’t freeze regarding what to be a done.
On the other hand, over-skepticism means a great deal of effort has been put in search for data to support his or her point of view, which is useless in most case. This can be aptly exemplified and illustrated by the case of foreign language learning. The vocabulary and grammar of a foreign language, widely accepted, is the most essential part in learning foreign language. Thus, a student would not get any help and improvement from questioning whether the words the taught is right or error.
Finally, the transmission of culture and history, need students to accept and memorize them rather than doubt and question. For example, many Americans can recite their National Anthem, or even the much lengthier Preamble to the United States Constitution. Their ability to do so can be attributed, at least in most part, to having been assimilated by rote learning rather skepticism. Meanwhile, without rote learning, student would find hard to study effectively and deeply when they can fully understand some critical concepts.
In conclusion, skepticism and rote learning is equally important for a student. Skepticism drive students to find the new world while rote learning make sure students have a sound foundation of study. |
