51The following appeared in a medical newsletter.
"Doctors have long suspected that secondary infections may keep somepatients from healing quickly after severe muscle strain. This hypothesis hasnow been proved by preliminary results of a study of two groups of patients. The first group of patients, all being treated for muscle injuries by Dr.Newland, a doctor who specializes in sports medicine, took antibioticsregularly throughout their treatment. Their recuperation time was, on average,40 percent quicker than typically expected. Patients in the second group, allbeing treated by Dr. Alton, a general physician, were given sugar pills, although the patients believed they were taking antibiotics. Their averagerecuperation time was not significantly reduced. Therefore, all patients whoare diagnosed with muscle strain would be well advised to take antibiotics aspart of their treatment."
1. The speaker'sconclusion was made by preliminary results of a study with only two groups ofpatients
2. The research object of the hypothesis wasthe patients who had severe muscle strain; however, the patients in the experimenthad muscle injuries. These are two different conceptions. Muscle injuries are worsethan muscle strain.
3. The second group in the experiment showedthat the patients’ recuperation were 40 percent quicker than typically expected, but we did not know how many people participated in it.
4. The two researches were made by twodifferent doctors from respective realm.

53. Thirteen years ago, researchers studied a group of 25 infants who showed signs of mild distresswhen exposed to unfamiliar stimuli such as an unusual odor or a tape recordingof an unknown voice. They discovered that these infants were more likely thanother infants to have been conceived in early autumn, a time when theirmothers' production of melatonin—a hormone known to affect some brainfunctions—would naturally increase in response to decreased daylight. In afollow-up study conducted earlier this year, more than half of thesechildren—now teenagers—who had shown signs of distress identified themselves asshy. Clearly, increased levels of melatonin before birth cause shyness duringinfancy and this shyness continues into later life.
1. The speaker’s assertion based on theresearch thirteen years ago. There might be some difference now.
2. The experiment only tested 25 infants tomake the conclusion.
3. The speaker considered that thefunctions would naturally increase in response to decreased daylight. It isuniversal acknowledge that the shortest daylight is in late winter. (效果岂不是更佳?)
4. The data, conducted by a follow-up study, was not accurate.
5. People’s character may impact on variousfactors during their growth.

237The following appeared as partof an article in a local Beauville newspaper.
"According to a government report, last year the city of Dillton reduced its corporate tax rate by 15percent; at the same time, it began offering relocation grants and favorablerates on city utilities to any company that would relocate to Dillton. Within18 months, two manufacturing companies moved to Dillton, where they employ atotal of 300 people. Therefore, the fastest way for Beauville to stimulateeconomic development and hence reduce unemployment is to provide tax incentivesand other financial inducements that encourage private companies to relocate here."
1.
Dillton and Beauville are two entirely different cities. (climate, region, culture, etc. )
2.
What is the price of the corporate tax before it reduced? (Itis not mentioned)
3.
Dillton encourages “any companies” to relocate to, notonly for “private companies”.
4. “300peopleare employed in Dillton” may not all of the employment are natives. So it is notnecessarily to be a reference for Beauville to reduce unemployment rate.
