"To be an effective leader, a public official must maintain the highest ethical and moral standards."




Both at the individual level and social level ,ethical and moral standards play an indispensable role .According to Aristotle, ethical and moral standards help people to distinguish things from right to wrong, and require people's comprehension to put them into practice, ultimately not only contribute people to be truly wise men ,but also benefit the social harmony as a whole. As morality and ethic are the answer to the question 'how ought we to live and work', leaders, especially in political realm, are ought to put more emphasis on improving their morality and
ethic. Because they are at the center of the society , every decision they make can be magnified in the spotlight, and their decision and behavior will cause widespread effects . Therefore ,from my perspective, high requirement of ethic and morality is a must to public official ,However, I keep my skepticism about the feasibility and necessity of their compliance with the "highest" standard

To begin with, An effective leader require different qualities compare to a business leader does . Unlike business leaders, who care more about maximization of productivity and profit , rather than the consequences they bring about to environment and sustainable development
, public official should concern more about the whole society instead of themselves, pursue the social welfare of people in different groups, enable fairness and justice , and attach more importance to benefits ,both in short-term and long term . That's why ethical and moral standard is especially important to them. In view of history , public leaders who have high moral standard can win respects and trust from people ,and accomplish their political goal more successfully. In China people admire the former premier Xiao Ping Deng, so they follow the reform and opening up policy actively ,spare no efforts to narrow the gap between the poor and the rich, to bring about a harmony and prosper society.
While leaders who are lack of morality and ethic are more likely to fail in their political career , or even be the catalyst of war and disaster . For example, Watergate destroyed Nixon’s political career. and consider Hitler, who is notorious as a killer for his tyranny in the Second World War, which caused numerous innocent Jews die.

On the other hand, while I agree that public official should have high moral standard, however, it does not mean they have to maintain the highest moral and ethical standard, actually no one does, because leaders are not as perfect as god, they also common people with design and impulse , so they can make mistakes like us Obama, who is the first black president in Unite State , wrote in his autobiography that he was once addicted to drug in his teenager time. At that time , he felt helpless and confused about future ,then he was influenced by friends around him to have drug . Finally he got rid of it and shared this experience with people ,because he belives that many black teenagers like him are facing the same problem in their life ,he wants to give them courage to set new life goal and pursue a meaningful life. His statement caused wide public concern, however, instead of denouncing , Journalists and critics commend his honesty , which is also help him win more trust and admiration in voters . .
Consequently , sometimes to evaluate a public official, we should put more emphasis on their contribution to the society than their private life . Consider Bill Cliton, whose scandal with Monica Lewensky is access to every citizen in America, but no one can deny that during the administration of Clinton, the US enjoyed more peace and economic well being than at any time in its history.

To sum up, high moral and ethic standard is an significant quality to great leaders , while we may not expect every leader can have the highest morality and ethic. But with all due respect, I do hope that public officials can maintain higher ethical and moral standards, because it is not only benefit the citizens but also the leaders themselves
