Issue 120. "So much is new and complex today that looking back for an understanding of the past provides little guidance for living in the present."


1. 在今天，很多事情都在飞速发展，这本身就超出了 历史可以预测的范围，很多事情都是人类历史上从未发生过的，人类已经不能完全照搬历史了
2. 但是，即使是在现代这样的社会，有一些问题同历史里的还是一样的
3. 如今，对待历史已经不能同过去一样了，人类的内心并没有像科技一样飞速发展，因此虽然今天的事情表面上同历史已经完全不同了，但是其本质仍然没有改变，比如现今的暴力事件的发生常常有着越来越新的方式，但是其发生的根本原因并没有改变，那就是人们之间不能相互理解，还有某些人的私欲


History,as a mirror of today, has been high valued and studied by people in everyculture for thousands of years, because people can find the solutions for theproblems they encounter similar to the preceding ones. However, as todayhuman's technology is evolving in an extremely high speed, the problem appearsbefore human beings are new and complex beyond the history. Then, does thehistory may guide human in the present life and future? As my opinion, it does,but through a new way different from the old ones in many cases.

Admittedly,as the contemporary society is changing rapidly, everything is becoming newerand more complex ones that we have never met. From the transportation to thecommunication and human's life style, today's everything are quite differentfrom any in the history. This will definitely result in the novel andcomplicated problems that we are hard-pressed to find direct guidance to solvethem. Such as the global warming now we facing has no solutions can found inthe human's experiences. And the information safe hasn’t been so complex aproblem that there is no way to solve it forever just by one effort.

However,there also are so many problems just like what they are in the past, that thereis of great worth for human to study history for the old guidance to thesimilar problems today we have. Because many problems are caused by the humanbeing's nature that human is bone with, such as the emotion, the greed, etc.,rather than what technology we have. For example, the war, violence, andcriminal are everywhere whether in history or in the present. To theseproblems, our ancestors have plenty of experiences in dealing with them. Whiletheir existences in the present hint that people in the past had never actuallysolved them, we can learn about the steps had been taken trying to deal withthem but failed, so that we can avoid making the same mistake as precedingpeople made.

Atpresent, although everything is evolving rapidly, man's mind has innovatedlittle. As results, today every event is superficially completely differentfrom those happened in the history, but the essential reason hasn't changed,nevertheless. For example, in spite of today's internet crimes are in acomplete new way of crime, the criminals' motivations are same as those in thepast that following their instinctive impulses despite of the damages imposedon others. The past experiences dealing with traditional crimes will alsoprovide us wisdom. Another example is that the economic crisis blowing throughthe whole world just like the one emerged several decades ago. Both of them arecaused by the humans' greed nature. So that by learning history we can find theprofound reason resulting in many contemporary problems.

In sum, Iconcede that nowadays the world has many modern, complicated things that modelsgetting from history will no longer work. However, there are still manyprecious experiences we could learn from history. In addition, learning historymay help us to perceive ourselves and others better.
