This editorial seems logical at the first glance, however, it is not well-reasoned. The editorial begins by stating the climate conditions of habitat for Arctic deer. Then by citing the reports from local hunters that the deer population are declining, which coincide with global warming trends that have caused the sea ice to melt, the author makes the assertion that deer's being unable to migrate as before leads to the decline in arctic deer population.

The conclusion stands on the presumption that the sea ice in deer's habitat is melt, which cause by global warming. However, Global warming is a global issue, which indicates the average level of the earth. Admittedly, global warming caused the sea ice to melt. But in this editorial the facts presented lends no evidence to the presumption that in Canada's arctic region, the sea ice is melt so that deer can't migrate across the frozen sea. The sea ice in that area might just became thin, but still, the deer can travel over it. Since the presumption isn't justified, the author can't assume the global warming is relevant to the decline in Arctic deer population.

There is no sufficient evidence for the statement that deer's being unable to follow their age-old migration cause the decline in population. The habitat may become warmer because of global warming, which is beneficial for plants' growing and arctic deer have more food to feed than before. So even if they can't travel to other islands to look for food, they still have enough plants to eat.

Moreover, the areas of the hunters’ activities are limited. If arctic deer migrate to further areas where the living conditions are better, which can’t be reached by the hunters. If so, the number of deer in the area that they used to live will decrease. And the hunters will feel the decline of deer population. Besides, local hunters estimate the population of arctic deer only according to the deer they have hunted or by vision, which is not a scientific means. So, the reports from local hunters aren’t persuasive enough for the statement that the total population of the arctic deer declined.

Last but not least, the author fails to rule out other possibilities into account. Environmental problems, excessive hunting and animal plaque can also lead to the decline of Arctic deer population. More scientific and comprehensive investigations are necessary before making the judgment that global warming and the melt sea ice is to blame.

Overall, the conclusion that the decline in arctic deer populations is the result of deer being unable to follow their age-old migration patterns across the frozen sea seems reasonable. To some degrees, this editorial constructively reminds us paying attention to the effects of global warming. However, before making any scientific conclusion about the arctic deer population, the author should make further investigation about the population of deer as well as the situation of the habitat and evaluate all possible alternatives.
