"Technologies not only influence but actually determine social customs and ethics."


There is no doubt that the development of technologies has changed the world a lot and brought us many benefits, especially after the Industrial Revolution. But do the technologies really determine social customs and ethics? In my view, it is social customs and ethic determines the development of technologies in real world.

To begin with, the development of technologies changes our lives from the individual level, like what we eat and how we live, to the social level, such as how a company operates. The development of technologies makes our life easier and more comfortable than before. What’s more, the development of technologies influence and actually determine many parts of life. For example, before the 1900s people traveled by horse and sea which are very slow way of travel. As a result, it was very hard for people at that time communicated with each other and people’s lives were in low condition. However, since 1915 the first car was invented by Ford, the technologies of transportation have been developing at an amazing speed till now. Nowadays, the technologies of transportation are highly developed. The modern technologies of airplane, vehicles, railways, sailing bring about benefits for people to travel around the world easier and faster than before, which changes our way of life and helps the development in different areas.

Even though technologies change many parts of our life, the development of technologies is determined by social customs and ethic. At the social customs level, social customs determines the way of technologies developing. The development of technologies couldn’t be aimless, which must fit our life style and what we really need. Social customs represents our life style and what we really need. Take the food engineering technologies as example, what we eat and how we eat are learnt from our older generation and have became the custom of our life. If the development of the food engineering technologies didn’t fit our custom and change a lot, we wouldn’t accept it and the development of the food engineering technologies would become useless.
To conclude, even though technologies would influence social customs, it is the social customs determines the way of technologies’ development.

Beside, at the level of ethic, the trend of technologies’ development must fit ethic, for ethic is one of the basic rules of a society. Ethic determines everything in a society, let alone the development of technologies. The cloning technology is a good example of ethic determining technologies. Even though cloning technology will helps a lot in the medical field, in many countries the cloning technology are strictly limited, especially the human being cloning. The human being cloning is strongly against the ethic of the society, so the laws of many developed countries limit the development of cloning technology. So this example shows ethic determines the technologies.

To sum up, the technologies really influence our daily life in many different ways, but the technologies could not determine all parts of life and develop freely. Not only the social customs determine the development of technologies, but also ethic plays an important part in the determination of technologies. With the determination of social customs and ethic, the development of technologies could truly fit what people and the society need.
