Argument 51

In this report, the speaker cites a result from a study of study of two groups of patients, and base on the result, he concludes that the hypothesis that secondary infections keep some patients from healing quickly after severe muscle strain is proved. And he recommends that all patients who are diagnosed with muscle strain should take antibiotics. This argument suffers from several critical flaws which render it unconvincing as it stands.

First of all, the speaker’s recommendation bases on the assumption that secondary infections keep some patients from healing from muscle strain. Yet, the result of the study of two groups of patients the speaker cited to bolster his point of view is not sufficient enough to prove this assumption. The threshold problem about the study is that it fails to make a valid comparison. Given that the two groups of patients are treated by different doctors-one specializes in sports medicine and the other is a general physician, it is definitely possible that anti-biotic is not the determinant of the recuperation time, and that it was the doctor’s expertise and disposition that determine the result of the study. To better support his view, the speaker, at least, should provide a result of study which patients are treated the same except whether they take anti-biotic.

Additionally, the speaker provides no evidence that the study is statistically reliable. In order to establish a strong correlation between effect of anti-biotic and time of recuperation, the study’s sample should be sufficiently large in size and representative of the objective population. The speaker should provide the number of patients in the study is sufficiently large, and that the patients in the study can represent all patients who suffer secondary infections after the muscle strain. Since the speaker fails to prove the reliability of the study, we cannot prove the assumption from this study.

Finally, even when the speaker can substantiate the assumption that secondary infections keep some patients from severe muscle strain, the speaker overlook the facts that not all patients who are diagnosed with muscle strain will suffer secondary infection. Possibilities are there that most muscle strain sufferer are not infected secondarily, thus need not take antibiotic. Moreover, the antibiotics can possibly cause unnecessary pain for those who do not have secondary infection.

In sum, the speaker cannot justify his or her recommendation on the basis of the result of the study. To better assess the recommendation, the speaker should provide a study which make a valid comparison for the effect of the antibiotic. The speaker should also provide evidence for the statistically reliability. I would also need to know the rates that patients who are diagnosed with muscle strain will get influenced by secondary infection.
