130 "How children are socialized today determines the destiny of society. Unfortunately, we have not yet learned how to raise children who can help bring about a better society."
I disagree with the speaker's absolute claim that how children are socialized today determines the destiny of society. And I think the speaker's worry that we are not acting well in the education of children, which may prejudice the future of our society, is unnecessary.
The term "socialized" means accepting the society's rules and standards of values, gaining skills to find oneself a position in the society. Thus, socialization is a basic capability for a person who is willing to succeed in the rather complicated and high-speedly developing society. But what kind of people would play determinant roles in the process of our society? Looking back on the history, we can safely draw the conclusion that socialization is not a part of the essential qualities that push forward the processes of history. If we judge the following persons with the view of socialization, they really did bad works: Beethoven was a man with bad temper who almost had no friends; Bruno openly challenged the authority of the Popery, then he was burned with the accuse of deviationism; Martin Luther King leaded the African American civil rights movementin the age long after the civil war but still existed racialism and got murdered by a racialist. They seemed so out of step with their ages, but what would our society be like without their great efforts, strives, and blood and lives? The main body of society is the public, namely socialized people, but the giant leaps for mankind are always leaded by one small step of the few, the persons with wisdom, courage, and determination. Those qualities, is what children should gain from the education and only when children are seized of those virtues can they determine the destiny of society.
The question that have we yet learned how to raise children or not should be discussed in the two angles:First, in the view of the speaker that the socialization of children determines the destiny of society, our education system has done great works: knowledge and skills can be learned in the class, and children gain communication ability from the daily activities with their peers. What children learn from school are quite useful, and our teachers and parents are so eager to teach children those so that they may easily find them good positions when they step into society. However, in my view, the overall eagerness to be socialized reveals the neglected part of our education: individuality. Although our children have been told that they are born in a age that advocates individuality, the fear of being separated by the society and the natural dependence on collective to escape personal responsibility keep them away from being real individuals. That is also the reason why history is made by quite a few people. In this regard, our education still has a lot to improve.
Referring to the term of "a better society", we are on the road of pursuing that all along. Every generation bring about their age based on the achievements of the formers and on the whole, the latter society is always better ,better developed. But as we are at an age that the developments in technology and science cannot surprise us anymore, what are we seeking for in "a better society"? Maybe we are seeking for "the better us". We are looking forward to a society that every individual can enjoy liberal development, not afraid of being part of majority, nor do they afraid of being part of minority. This kind of society can never be realized by socialization or technological developments, it can only be achieved through education.
In conclusion, the socialization of children cannot determines the destiny of society, and education, the only effective way of achieving a better society, has a long way to go. |
