The critic, who seems to have feud with the artist, are viewed as the precisian of the art works, as they usually find flaws in the works and never reluctant to give criticism. And it is often the case that the critiques easily influence and mislead the society’s attitude toward the piece of work,
distorting the intrinsic purpose of the author. Besides, the comments made by criticts rarely passed on through the time. Therefore, albeit critics can make a contribution to the society, the influence is limited and not lasting, while for the artist who create the art works, they share their opinion of the universal values with the mass by expressing ideas through the works, eliciting the deeper thinking of the audience, and thus the artist propose a long-lasting value for the society as a whole.

Just as the planar design guru in Taiwan, Ling-Hung Shih, said in reponse in one of her interview(and I paraphrase), by displaying the ideas and sharing the thoughts, most of which reflect the common values of th human being, artists enable people to rethink the values and believes so common in the life, for example, either accentuating the importance of protecting environment and the less advantaged groups in the community, or indicting the crulty and brutal terrorism of the al-Qaeda group. The artist along with their works give the society far-reaching value.

The critic, on the other hand, do not propose value as significant and lasting value as artist do to the society. It is a matter of fact that as far as most people’s concern, the contributions of art towards them come from the art works and their author, not the comments or opinion of the critics. This might be resulted from the fact that there are assorted and divers opinions for the same piece of art works, and people are confused and frustrated by them. As for the dream of Red Chamber, some critics consider it a love story; others hold the opinion that it is something about a family’s destiny; still others comment that it is actually about young people’s friendship. Yet, as a matter of fact, when reading such a novel, the most important for a common reader is no other than their own feelings about the story, which is mostly damaged by those comments critics made before.

Another reason why artist cannot provide a lasting value for the society is that the critque they give will mislead the mass and distort the real meaning of the author. The Lecture Room, one of the most successful TV program aiming at promoting knowledge of progenitor and traditional chinese culture, provides opinion and research findings to the public. But they neglect the fact that the thoughts and findings of the traditional works lack authenticity of the origin, and people may easily accept the stellar opinion.

In conclusion, artists propose society the lasting value by sharing and displaying their ideas through the art works, thus inspiring people in the society to get deeper thinking about the common values and believes, while critics fail to do so due to the limitations of them stated above.
