Through the way people look, dress, andbehave, usually we can know what kind of people he/she is to some extent. Butis it the same in perceiving what the society really performs like in onlyobserving its citizens? From my point of view, I would hold an opposite onefrom the author's. Regarding of this kind of question, we should cope it caseby case.
Admittedly, external appearance does revealpeople's attitudes and interests to some extent. People differs from each other, everyone has his/her own perspective to the world which was formed along withexperiences since little. Time by time, we can tell what kind of person is evenwhat job does he/she occupies immediately almost at a glance of his/her dressand appearance. For instance, when we come across with a guy wears a shirt veryartistic, with a trousers exaggeratedly tight or lose, noticing some pigmentcolor spot on his shirt or nails, we might tell he is an artist at a very highcorrect rate. In work days, we can see many white-collars rushing on the streetto get to work. And it's widely known that in different venues, actors, especially actresses would dress distinctively in order to show their taste andperspectives in regard to different themes of the events. In reality, it's easyto know people's characters and attitudes to life. People who areself-restricted and serious, they will tend to dress tidy and simple; peoplewith a personality extroverted, will dress casually.
Furthermore, we can distinguish certain groupof people or country from others by observing their dresses. Acts and dressesis an important element for us to understand the character of a society.Traditions and customs are shaped by acts and ideas of the people who form thespiritual and material progress since thousands of years ago and passed down bygenerations. A certain group of people defines the society and its ideology, and performs as modifiers. Take Arabic women as example. We all know that theconvention of Arabic women wearing black from head to feet, and would never show their face in front of a man. From this we could informed that it isArabic tradition and the social level of them. In the case of Japanese people, who always treat people as polite as possible in spite of any occasion. Thusthey are often featured with etiquette and courtesy.
However, we could not deny that it's notalways like what we see by eyes. Sometimes observations by external are toosubjective and unreliable for us to make a haste move. The world now is changing rapidly, time to time we feel no easy to keep updated to time. At the beginningof the policy of open to the outside world was settled in China, people werewearing almost same clothes on the streets, for lack of material resources;people were restricted to one stereotype. After the launch of Open Policy, bunches of new sources and information came into China, helping China progressand develop in a large scale. We can no longer judge China to what it was withan old photo.
Meantime, we can only get some superficial information of a person by looking at his dressing and limited behaviors, ittoo hasty to tell what his real ideology and opinion to the world is. Asmentioned above, if a man wears a jean and sun-glasses, ordinary people wouldregard him as bad guy, but now, everybody wears jeans. It is the same when referringto a society or a country. If we really want to understand a society's idea andvalues, we should study its culture and history.
By observing behaviors and look of aperson, we are able to tell what kind of people he is, but if we really want to know more, it's necessary of us to talk to him, get acquainted with him. It isthe same that if we want to comprehend a society's value and ideology, weshould not only contemplate its people, but also research its history andculture. |
