It is the artist not critic, who gives society something of lasting value



I agree with the speaker that the real value of beauty and nature in society are given by artists not critics. The controversy ideas reveal a ridiculous thinking that the contemporaries cannot understand the essence and value of the beauty artists presented to them, and that without critics artists will be nothing. Nevertheless, in my view, we must not ignore the efforts made by critics who contribute a lot to art and interpreting the value; otherwise, some non-mainstream art which cannot be understandable to the public will suffer losses or tragedy of the society.
It is the artists, with aesthetic view of the phenomenon relating to the factual world, create paintings, architect, or music which presents lasting beauty, human nature, and surfaces of the society from then on. When appreciating a piece of painting, even which is created by centuries ago, the appreciators also can follow the guide through the color shade and size emphasis in the picture, relating the images shown to the factual world by imagining, through which one can have a sense of beauty the artists wanted him to understand. To exemplify it , I can give you a more specific example. To get a thorough understand of what Franz Lizst, one of the famous composers representative for romanticism, put in Tannhaucer, the audiences related the trumpet sound at the beginning to a start of a ceremony. Then, followed with the elevated sound, one can depict a picture of men and women aligned in a pompous palace, which is a sign for a dancing ball, after which appreciators will enjoy a grand banquet with happiness. This masterpiece has been remembered for its complicated denoting a debutant ball, reflecting a usual manner of contemporary civilization and jubilant atmosphere that can be still sensed by audiences now, thus creating a lasting value of happiness.
However, we can not deny the fact that it is almost impossible for contemporaries to have understood any valuable work of art, let alone to appreciate its lasting significance. It is often the case that artists who have ideas and sense ahead of the time have not always met with sympathy or understanding. Therefore, introducing their art to the public calls for strong faith in one’s seeking for aesthetical achievements, since it has often resulted in ignorance of their works and artists’ suicides.
What’s worse, to cater to present need for the public aesthetic demand, or just on the intention of earning money, artists today may be gravitated to create so called art that is actually of no worth. As a result, the artists who are supposed to lead and cultivate the real value are the one who destroy and mislead the value of the society in turn. Large amount of trashes art flowing to the world, can strike the real value and art standard in people’s mind.
While an artist doesn’t suffice to create something of lasting value, a critic also plays a considerable part in forming the society’s aesthetical value. It is critics, with professional skill of judging and commenting art, who show the whole picture of art by showing their interpreting of the work. People can consult to the experienced critics to get a thorough understanding of art. As a perfect example, if someone without related background needs to understand Broadway Boogie-Woogie, an masterpiece painted by Pont Mondrian, one of the representatives of abstract painter, he must need help from professional commentary on its depiction by using straight horizontal and vertical line in simplest colors. So one can get to know that the picture is famous for its abstract description of the bustling sights and sound in Manhattan city.
Simply put, artists can show their lasting wisdom and beauty in their works; and yet, whether the value can become effective among people depends on professional critics. Only artists may not benefit society by their arcane works, while critics can tell us how to understand and what to pursue in the process of enjoying art. Without critics, large amounts of art may be viewed with distain, thus resulting in lose of value.
