The speaker asserted that when a society can't ensure people the basic life stander, the money spent on arts is unnecessary and even ruthless. It might be tempting to agree with the speaker on the consideration of our people's live. However, I concede that art make significant contribution to our human beings which strength our spiritual world and offer us many other social benefits at the same time.

Firstly, art is the creative of human activities which convey an idea, or emotion and have the influence on individual spirit. We can't deny the positive influence of art which help people enhance themselves, especially when people are down, or suffering something that other people can't really understand. That is why, today when we watch Van Gogh, Monet's paintings, listen to
Beethoven's moonlight sonata, we will still be touched and can’t help ourselves by an strong power. A power comes from arts, a power will never die in human's history and our spirit. From this view, art is also a need as same as food, water, jobs and basic survive skills.

Secondly, to postpone arts because someone in our society is suffering starvation may postpone arts forever. In the history of human civilization, there are no countries could ensure the life all their people lived are totally satisfied. In fact, arts can play a role in regulating economic activities, and hence, improve the economic of the country and offer more jobs to people. For example, as Hollywood, American film industry, which is heavily assisted by American government, and at the same time provides countless financial benefits. This is a typical example that art can also be a means of solve social problems.

However, arts can't live without subsidizations from the government or patrons which offer the financial support and keep the art industry run. Additionally, the material is the basis of people's spiritual lives, that is to say , when people are still struggling for a living, they can't fully enjoy his or her life, especially spiritual life. That may be why the speaker argue that arts are cruel when one still consider about his or her living problem. Indeed, to build a balance relation between art and money is the most effective way to solve the immediate social problem, which enhance people's spiritual world and also supply other social benefits.

In sum, we can't ignore the immediate social problem as developing our art industry, and we can't consign art to oblivions social problem still existing. So there must be a balance between the material and spirit life, which form a much harmonious society and help to build a splendid human civilization.
