51. "Education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student."



Is it justifiable that only through making education meet the individual demands as well as interests will education be truly effective? Perhaps some one will say: “Exactly”. From my perspective, I can not agree with this assertion totally. Since there are some other factors that have influence on the quality of education.

Indeed, it is necessary for education to focus on the individual needs and personal interests. Because one of the purposes of instruction is to benefit one from gaining the knowledge he or she wants and enjoys. And sometimes it is owing to the enthusiasm of distinct knowledge that acts as the stimulating power to students’ efforts on their study. For instance, in lots of universities, it is available for many students to decide their major and the center of their academic research. One who is favor of physics can choose to major in theoretical physics or mechanics, while a student who wants to achieve the goal of becoming a business hunter can enroll in the lectures about marketing or accounting. In this way, it may come true that students have the chance to acquire the skills and ability that they are favor of and need in the future. Thus, by specialized education, its actual influence will be more practical and effective.

Nevertheless, although to some extent this view is valid, sometimes the specialized and distinctive education is not actually accessible to students. After all, it is not an easy task for one to realize what the individual requirement and passion. And every student has to spend time on the process of figuring out the fact. One typical example is the high school students in China. Before they enter colleges, the curriculums of high school just includes some fundamental subjects, like math, verbal, history and so forth. Since at their age, they may probably have difficulty in understanding their real interests, whereas these basic lessons are essential for their careers In the future. Yet, if the teaching in high school transforms to focus on differencing the subjects rather than the basic knowledge, perhaps most students will be confused. So sometimes it must be admitted that the individual-center model of education will not bring about the anticipated benefits.

Furthermore, in order to make education truly effective, there are some other relevant factors that must be taken into consideration. Since education emphasizes on not only offering human the opportunity to accept knowledge, but also one’s comprehensive growth and improvement, which means that it is narrow and unreasonable to only concern with individual demands and interests. Accordingly, the importance of other aspects of education should not be ignored. For example, the skepticism is critical for students. The teaching focused merely on rote and learning through recitation seldom contribute to the education quality, while students should question what they are taught in class rather than accepting it passively. Therefore, with skepticism, students can gain knowledge in a creative way, and education will work in a very effective way.

To sum up, only the focused and characteristic education could not assure that it will be real effective. As there exist many other elements that should be involved, like the instruction with skepticism and so on. Besides, this purpose requires the mutual cooperation and great diligence of instructors as well as students.
