TOPIC: ARGUMENT51 - The following appeared in a medical newsletter.
"Doctors have long suspected that secondary infections(二次感染) may keep some patients from healing(康复) quickly after severe(严重的) muscle strain(肌肉劳损). This hypothesis(假设) has now been proved by preliminary(初步的) results of a study of two groups of patients. The first group of patients, all being treated for muscle injuries by Dr. Newland, a doctor who specializes in sports medicine, took antibiotics regularly throughout their treatment. Their recuperation(康复) time was, on average, 40 percent quicker than typically expected. Patients in the second group, all being treated by Dr. Alton, a general physician(医师), were given sugar pills(药丸), although the patients believed they were taking antibiotics. Their average recuperation time was not significantly reduced. Therefore, all patients who are diagnosed with muscle strain would be well advised to take antibiotics as part of their treatment."
The argument that antibioticswould be well advised to diagnose with muscle strain falls into several severefallacies. And it may mislead patients suffering from muscle injuries to adoptantibiotics excessively.
First of all, in order to justify the effectof antibiotics, two groups of thepatients should be the same. But there is no evidence shows that. We maysafely assume that patients with severe muscle strain are more likely to go tosee sports medical doctor, while patients with chronic muscle strain prefer tobe treated by general doctor. If so, there is no wonder the sufferers treatedby Dr. Newland is 40 percent quicker, even if both the groups of the sufferersare treated by sugar pills. And two groups of the patients should be manyenough in order to get rid of some random factors which also have not beenmentioned in the argument. We can make an extreme example that both the groupsof the patients are organized by only one sufferer, and the patient treated byDr. Newland is stronger than patient from the other group to defend injuries. Then their different effects are nature.
Secondly, two groups of muscle injuries aretreated by different kinds of doctors. The doctor who specializes in sportsmedicine will take more effective methods to treat patients other than takingantibiotics, while the general doctor may perform not so professional intreating the same patients with the same symptorn. And patients may takeadvises made by Dr. Newland more seriously, because advises made by specializesin sports medicine seems to be more reasonable. All of these factors will makea contribution to the group treated by Dr. Newland recuperate more quickly, nomatter whether being treated by antibodies or not.
Finally, the average recuperation time of thepatients mask that some patients in the first group doesn’t recuperate 40percent quicker than typical expected. In fact, antibiotics may be useless fortheir recuperation and even do harm for them (especially for those who areallergic to antibiotics).
All in all, only by dividing the group withsame standards and enough individuals, and analyze every individuals in thegroups respectively, can we get the appropriate conclusion.
顺便说一下,个人总觉得黑体字部分的表达有点chinglish,sign~~~~~~~ |
