130"How children are socialized today determines the destiny of society. Unfortunately, we have not yet learned how to raise children who can help bring about a better society."
Children, or young generation, who promotes and continues the progress of the future society, are often considered the hope of the future society. How children were raised, especially how they are socialized, becomes a major concern, as people believe that there may exist a connection between proper socializing and the future well-being of the society. In line with the thoughts, people would inevitably question the effectiveness of the modern parenting and schooling in facilitating children to be better socialized, and finally, to develop a greater society when children grow up.
Taken the effect of some early life experience on one’s entire life both evident in personal experience and in scientific research, it is almost impossible to ignore the relationship between child socialization and their later behaviors and value system as adults, which considerably influence the future society. Socialization of children begins immediately from getting along with parents, other family members, and then extends to being acquainted with neighbors, and later, when starting kindergarten and schools, making friends and maintaining friendship, probably also accumulating painful experience such as bullying, hating, and even associated physical and verbal abuses. The memory of the social experience that a child has, however vague it might be, is highly likely to be maintained constantly, especially when it comes to the feelings and emotions stimulated by the direct experience, which Freud has maintained in his theory, arguing the childhood can at least partly determine one’s life. Although the Freud’s generalization may have gone too far, personal experience has informed us that, if taken a good care by parents, children will have positive feelings, including being pleased, amused, relaxed, and recreated, towards parents and family. In contrast, cases are prevalent when those who are the target of constant playground bullying becomes a loser in school, mostly because a strong negative feeling towards school, irresponsible teachers, and unfriendly, even violent peers.
When children grow older, the memory of those early social episodes continues to function, and becomes even more powerful. The pleasant experience will encourage one to fulfill the social roles, such as being a responsible parent and spouse to guard one’s marriage and family. On the contrary, the negative experience can form stubborn stereotypes of certain groups of people, together with certain social activities. How much likely would a previous loser in a baseball match who was usually laughed at be fond of playing baseball when they grow older? Put it more directly related to the society, how would one always felt lonely in school contribute to a corporate culture which values sophisticated interpersonal communication? Such failure, although may seem minor on an individual basis, can be magnified by thousand of times if most children failed to have a positive experience and attitude in their early life. If this were the case, it is not hard to imagine that the society would also be affected, as the individuals are reluctant to fulfill or enrich their social responsibilities.
Hence, people tend to question whether modern people raise their children appropriately to meet the standard of being well-socialized so that to develop a more prosperous society. It is true that prevalent mass media and high technologies, including TV,
the computer, the Internet, the cell phones, somewhat taking children way from traditional socializing activities, such as physically getting together and play after school. Instead, they tend to spend more time in the cyber space and communicate with each other remotely. People may argue that the new innovations therefore debilitate children’s socializing skills. Nevertheless, the younger generation, who grew up with the computers and the Internet, actually tend to be more upfront, candid, and brave in standing up for what they believe in. They are more likely to tolerate the differences among people, including culture differences, homosexual marriage, and ethnic differences. Meanwhile, children are better than their predecessors in absorbing new technologies and even initiating innovations. If we define a better society as to have a higher tolerance in people’s differences, and a keen and ambitious desire in launching technological innovations to improve people’s everyday life and to smoothen the communication, the modern society is much better than previous ones, which means, the modern way to raise children should be regarded effective and beneficial.
While realizing the importance of the appropriate socialization of children, we should also understand the future of a society does not only hinge on children per se. If the prosperity of a society means the general welfare of citizens, richness of its art and literature creations, the advancement of the high technologies, and the wide-spread knowledge of demography together with effective practice of it, there are much more determinants that we need to identify. For example, the justice of the law system ensures the stability of a society and increase the confidence of its citizens to the nation. Given a deteriorated jurisdiction system, the crime will never be deterred but become more rampant, and the tension between citizens and the indifferent government and degrade justice system can finally escalate to turmoil or other violent incidents, neither of which would contribute to the welfare of the public as a whole.
Based on the both personal experience and scientific research, we have quite well understood the impact brought by one’s early life experience –including social experience – can influence one’s later life as an adult, which can either facilitate the well-being of the society, or debilitate it. Motivated by the notion, we are bound to reflect on our parenting and schooling. Fortunately, there is no need to panic on the seemingly ineffectiveness of the current situation, as merits of the modern world has demonstrated itself better than the previous ones, indicating the effectiveness of modern parenting and schooling. |
