28The surest indicator of a great nation is represented not by the achievements of its rulers, artists, or scientists, but by the general welfare of its people.
A great nation means not only the welfare of its people, but also the achievement of its rulers, artists and scientists. Nation represents its entire people, not only some specific groups.
Admittedly, a great nation needs its people live well. Like North Korea, although its leaders have made some achievements, as lunching the rockets and so on, we would not call North Korea a great nation as a result of its poor-living people. History informs us that sometimes the nation is even unstable when most of its people could not get a good life. For example, In the Tang dynasty of China, An Lushan caused an famous rebellion because the people could not gain their livings.
But it is not to say that the achievements of the rulers, artists, or scientists are not important. Certainly, they can lead the whole society toward prosperity. For instance, rulers enact laws and regulations to ensure the society can operate harmoniously, artists can draw people to realize and learn to behave well in ethics, and scientists make great revolutions to improve the living standard and to improve knowledge system of the whole society. Without their achievement, the society will surely become disordered, people lack a sense of morality, and the nation will never develop further.
Only when rulers, artists, scientists make achievements, and its people gain welfare, can a nation be called great. Like United States, Russia, and United Kingdom, they are all great. Their leaders all have important influence on the world, their scientists have made great improvement, their people all live a good living standard, and they have attracted so many people to live in. If only their leaders, artists or scientists make great achievement, or only their people gain welfare, can we say that these countries are great?
A nation is not some people’s nation, but all the people’s nation. We all hope that our nations can be great, and then what should we do?
