好难的一个句子啊，谁看得懂？

相当于
The duty of a him is knowing the whole person , not just his disease but also the his past and present.

第三个instead of 接在了that is 的后面，用来解释what it means for a physician to know the whole person of a given patient.

最后一个难点是concerning which这个定语从句，也就是 concerning which the physician is a "specialist" ，这句话是说， 如果只是考虑病人的病情的话，那么跟别的physican一样，他也就成为了一个specialist，换句话说他就不具备他不同于其他physician的品质了。

刚刚才看到了楼主的整个段落，之前只看到了句子。最开始看到he的时候认为这个he表示泛指，读到后面觉得不应该是泛指，应该是指的某个特定的人，最多值具有共同特性的一部分人。括号里面的or those anonymous physicians...就是说的和那个医师具有相似品质的人。

我问了一个 UOW 比较文学的PHD,
他说：Hi Travis,

To me, the sentence just means that this doctor wants all doctors to learn as much as possible about the whole medical history of each patient.  A specialist, like someone who only treats lung cancer, may focus all his attention on a patient's lung and breathing issues.  So the specialist that Walter White goes to in "Breaking Bad" wouldn't be a good example because he wants to know everything going on in Walter's life, like how he asks questions about Walter's wife and her pregnancy.

I hope this helps.  It may also have been confusing to you because it is part of a larger section of text with other complicated sentences.

I agree that this sentence , as well as the entire paragraph , talks about this specific doctor.But I don't think it okay to infer from what's given in the sentence that this doctor wants all doctors to learn from him.There's no such information given. There's another possibility : for example , the author intends to bring this specific doctor to a spotlight.

concerning的意思这里是与。。。有关，所以第二个instead of that part of him（patient）才是concerning 一个医生是否是专家还是一个医生

我也想过这个，但是这里并不表示一个一般性的结论，也就是说并不是说如果一个医生只考虑病人的病情，那么他就只是一个specialist。可能只是侧重他和其他一般的医师的不同之处：他（this doctor) 要去管病人的全部，而不只是病人的病情。

不知道全文，所以就不知道哪种理解更好些，不过单独理解这句子倒是没多大问题。

my application this year has partly been messed up by EMS...
