When discusssing the role of parents in children's education, there's no doubt that there are so many differences between the parents today and the parents in the past in several ways since people's lifestyle and ideology have changed rapidly through all those years. Furthermore, no one can deny the more involing role nowadays parents have in children's lives if he investigates people's lives carefully. The phenomenon is due to many reasons, for example the size of a nuclear family now and the society's anticipation of childrem, especially in developing countries like China.
First, 40 years ago, it was a common phenomenon that every family had at least 2 children in China. Since the economy was so depressing at that time, every parent's goal was to survive rather than to pursue and enjoy. They were busy feeding their children had had no money or time sending their children to school or acted as teacher in home. However, things are different now. As economy developed a lot and the nation put a ban on mothers giving birth to a second child, chirldren are born without brothers or sisters and hence became the only hope for a family.
As a result, chirldren are the only focus of their parents. The most expensive houses are those close to schools; the most lucrative job is teaching students math or English after school. Parents are sending their chirdren to different schools and have specific plans for their chirdren. No longer are the parents who only appear on the desk, providing chirdren with food, the parents today are the maids of chirdren who take good care with every step in chirdren's education.
When my mother was a little girl, my grandma never asked about her grades since I had an uncle, and my grandma's goal was mainly earning money to support the family. However, when I went to school, my mother was like my second teacher who checked my homework everyday and sent me to learn dancing and painting.
Second, when a country is poor, the education level of citiznes is low, and few parents can actually answer their children's questions. A child curious of what brings us rain fall may never anticipate of getting answers from his farmer parents.
Things are different now. Even if there are still a lot of parents who are unfamiliar with physics or chemitry, they are overall more educated than those in the past. They can at least teach their children some basic calculation or recide several famous poems to them. There's a saying that home is more important than schools in terms of education. Indeed, as long as parents care for their children, they would absolutely tried to take part in teaching their children knowlege, since they all want there children to be cleverer.
That's actually how I learned English when I was 5years old. My mother taught me "How are you " and "Good morning". The same situation can rarely be seen when my mother was young. My grandma cannot even wirte Chinese, there's on way that she can be my mother's English teacher.
After all, as time passed by, we are seeing a generation with higher education level and values knowledge much more. We are also seeing famlily who pays more attention on chirdren since they are parents' only love. Parents have the motivation and time along with ability to teach their children, to be the teacher, it is the natural for us to say that parents today are more involved in their children's education thaa were parents in the past.
