Recruiting TWO PhD students (motivated students) for Fall of 2020

Position 1
Hybrid halide perovskites have emerged as an important class of optoelectronic materials for a diverse range of applications, including solar energy harvesting and solid-state lighting. This project will test the hypothesis that the reaction between an amine and a hybrid halide perovskite has a threshold amine pressure, below which the reaction can be used to reliably synthesize a nanoscale shell around the perovskite, improving its environmental stability and interfacial electrical properties. The proposed research project aims at developing fundamental understanding of reactions between amine vapors and hybrid perovskite substrates. A custom-built glove box vacuum reactor with in situ infrared spectroscopy, quartz crystal microbalance, and mass spectrometry will be used to enable detailed studies of the chemical reaction mechanisms and identify the threshold pressure in a set of important amine-perovskite reactions. The effects of amine molecular size, proton affinity, chemical composition and processing temperature on the threshold pressure will be studied. Operating conditions will be identified to precisely control of the extent of reaction for the growth of nanometer-scale perovskite crystals.  

Position 2
Manufacturing computing chips now demands the capability that can place materials on substrates with unprecedented precision in composition, spatial location and dimensions. Area-selective atomic layer deposition (ALD) is a key enabling technology to reduce functional device dimensions, reduce manufacturing complexity and cost for integrated circuits and reduce the energy consumption by computing chips. However, the potential of this technology is severely limited by the narrow choices of selective growth chemistries, as well as poor understanding of the heterogeneity of surface chemistry on the selectivity of nucleation in ALD. The project will study the formation of carboxylates SAM and selectivity of the nucleation of ALD chemistries with in situ characterizations of the substrate's mass and chemistry, and gaseous byproducts, and with ex situ atomic force microscope-infrared (AFM-IR) spectroscopy to exam the heterogeneity of surface chemistries and establish the relationship of chemistry-process parameter-nucleation inhibition.
