TOPIC:ISSUE160 - "The most essentialquality of an effective leader is theability to remain consistently committedto particular principles andobjectives. Any leader who is quickly and easilyinfluenced by shifts inpopular opinion will accomplish little."
WORDS: 642 TIME: 00:45:00 DATE: 2007-10-15 14:06:03
To remain consistently or shift in popularopinion and be influenced byothers, it is a controversial question for aneffective leader. Some mayclaim that being consistent is the essentialquality, whereas anothergroup of people may assert there is no particularprinciples andobjectives that are completely and absolutely accurate.Nevertheless, from my own angle, this debate must be dependent on thespecificdefinition of the phrases "principles and objectives", sincethereare actually two categories: one is the conscientious beliefaccording to bothlegal and moral standards and the common welfare; theother type is to reachthe aim by whatever he/she can without concerningrestriction. As a balancepoint of view, it is urgent for us to evaluatethese two categories withrational and impartial standards.
On the one hand, if we define"principles and objectives" as the mostessential virtues which areidentical to the legal and moral standards, there is no need to change. Incontrast, an effective leader has alwaysbeen achieving successful goals byoccupying and remaining consistencyof believes. For instance, the firstpresident of the United States,George Washington, who refused thethird term of presidency, had set uslandmark examples of preventing autocracy, tyranny, despotism andpromoting a democratic, systematical, ordered society.Taking thefounder of modern India,Mahatma Gandhi for another example, he had wasa tremendous model of practicingand advocating non-violence even in theextreme situations. His simple butimportant belief in the freedom ofhuman beings has influence generations toshare the independence value.Consider, if George Washington chose to changehis point and continuedhis presidency, Americamay still be controlled in an autocracygovernment and the US citizens maystill be suffering from human rightsviolation today. Similarly, if Gandhichose to shift from an activistand protest leader to an ordinary person, justas the advice of otheropponents, he may be living longer without being assassinated, but thehistory of India should be re-written because it could notliberateitself from British colonialism. Theprinciples and objectivesaccording to legal and moral standards and the commonwelfare must bekept doubtlessly in the aim to effectively reach the goal ofleaders.
On the other hand, if the "principlesand objectives" are defined asreaching goals without concerning anythingrelated with common welfareand belief, keeping consistency is harmful to thesociety. The leader ofNazi Germany, Hilter, who abused his power to dominatethe world andslaughtered millions of innocent Jewish people, in spite ofotherpeople's advice, chose to reach his ambitious and failed in thelast moment.Another example is the former president of America, RichardNixon, whosecontempt for the legal system and sabotaging the Democratsduring the campaignafforded his forfeiture of power, since he did notadopt other practicalsuggestion for him to stop. Nixon's tale provedthe wrong principles andobjectives can cause the failure of being aneffective leader, since they arerejected from the common belief andcontradict with humanity, moral, legalstandards.
To keep the correct and refuse the wrongprinciples and objectives, itis equally important to evaluate the assessingstandards of these twocategories. To reach the political goals, the leadermust adopt theright advice and has wisdom to separate the good and bad ones, inaddition with talent and experience to create more value for thesocietymore effectively. To avoid the abuse of power and autocracy, theleader shallbe very skillful at listening others' criticism and beflexible to shift fromhell to the heaven, related with his own valuewhich is comparable with theprinciples and objectives to the world. Tobe an effective, it is arbitrary toindicate whether consistency orchanging will be better without further concerningabout the contents ofprinciples and objectives. |
