9.21 学习类(2)

80"All students should be required to take courses in the sciences, even if they have no interest in science."

Position:        For most students, they should be required to take courses in science even they have no interest in it. However, for a few students with great talents, they should choose what appeals to them to inspire their natural talents.
1        For most ordinary students, taking courses in science should be a requisite. (1) Science enables us the understand the world in which we are living better. For example, children may feel curious and confused how precipitation forms, and why they should fall off rather than go up. After studying basic physics, they get the answer. (2) Practical life needs science. For example, you may sometimes have to fix the radio machine, washing machine, or your car when they break down which requires some basic knowledge of mechanics, electronics, chemistry. And Consider the interconnected world in which we are all connected behind a computer, you will definitely have to know how to access the internet, and diagnose what was wrong when the connection fails. And moreover you’ll probably have to set up a home network for your family. All these requires knowledge of computer science. It is a requisite for anyone who live in this amazing era driven by science. (3) Science provides rationality and reasoning while art provides emotion and morality, they supplement to each other.
2        For a few extremely talented students, they may choose what interests them. Education has always been divided into common education and elites education. Common education aims to transfer knowledge and technique and morality to the next generation who will in turn pass it down to the next, while elite education is to give special education to those who display a great gift for something, either science or art, the best teaching on that. For example (1) Mozart, Beethoven do not have any idea on science, but they have a gift for art, if they are required to study science …. And if they are required to study science, the result may be (1) struggle for marks (2) Find a job (3) Mediocre professor.
3        In sum …

90"College students should be encouraged to pursue subjects that interest them rather than seek programs that promise entry into the job market."

Position: Agree. It is school’s responsibility to help students find their aptitude and interest and also should encourage them to pursue their interest.
1        Interest is a vital and driving factor for study. (1) passion (2) courage of combating difficulty (3) Enduring impetus. For example, …太多了.
2        Setback of seeking programs that guarantee good job. (1) Becoming mediocrity (2) Does not lead to great success without pursuing one’s truly interest. (3) Caring too much for marks and grades, rather than the skill itself.
3        Admittedly, there lies the possibility that one’s interest is not where one’s talents lies. And through constantly changing jobs in the job market, one may well find the right position that great inspires his talent. However, when someone pursuing an interest, he could also find whether or not he is competent in that.
4        In sum…

94"Universities should require every student to take a variety of courses outside the student's field of study because acquiring knowledge of various academic disciplines is the best way to become truly educated."

Position: Agree with reservation. Students need to expand their range of knowledge because the world is so interconnected and complicated. However, by requiring so they may be distracted from their major.
1        The new era calls for comprehensive knowledge. For example, biochemistry, needs both biology and chemistry, and sometimes a knowledge of history may help biology majored students understand creature better. And for students of law school and other social science (political science, archeology)majored students, they particularly need a knowledge of almost every subject, because the problem they faced in the future is extremely complicated and will definitely involve many aspects. Archeologist, for example, when the identify the age of an antique, the may use mathematics, economics, history, politics, chemistry.
2        Students energy is limited and being required to take a variety of courses that are not related to their field of study may distract them from concentrating on their subject. So a reasonable quantity of subject may be advised.
3        In sum …

106"All students should be required to take at least one course in ethics, even if taking the course means a decreased emphasis on academic subjects."

Position: Agree. Moral education is very important, but academic subjects should not be deemphasized for sake of ethical education.
1        Moral education is very important. (1) Without a good understanding of morality, the students cannot distinguish from right and wrong. Technology is omnipotent, but we should not abuse it, and should restrain it with morality. If students lack adequate moral education, they may bring intermittent trouble to the society with their academic skills. For example, 1) network hacker 2) educated racist, extremist, anarchist, anti-society.
2        However academic course should not be affected when taking ethical course. (1) Taking a few boring ethical course won’t count much for the improvement morality level, it is how their parents and the whole society behave that affect the students most. In this sense, sacrificing academic education to emphasizing morality is not worthwhile. (2) Ethical problems are often caused by poverty, and academic study contributes to the prosperity of society and in turn would raise the level of morality.
3        In sum…

5、"A nation should require all its students to study the same national curriculum until they enter college rather than allow schools in different parts of the nation to determine which academic courses to offer."

Position: Agree. it is beneficial to require all the students study the same curriculum. However, in some condition, schools should be granted to add courses that suit their necessity.
1        The same curriculum is beneficial. (1) Equality of different areas (2) A balanced education level of a nation and is easy to evaluate and assess (3) Prevent corruption, some school don’t provide courses that cost much and appropriate the school funding, by requiring the curriculum, the government has a definite criteria to provide funding and assess their work.
2        In some condition, school should be granted to school to offer courses they feel necessary. (1) Course for some talents. Such as some school has excellent skating teacher, but the state curriculum does allow skating course, so it is a waste of resource. And if there are a lot of students in some area who have talents for skating, but they have no chance to be trained, it is possible their talents may be ruined.
3        In sum …

80. "All students should be required to take courses in the sciences, even if they have no interest in science."

position: agree
1    Taking courses in the sciences benefits not only students in the sciences but also students in other realms.
2    The research methods in the sciences can be applied to the studies of other realms. Take the Italian universal genius Leonardo Da Vinci as an instance. As we know, he is famous for his masterly paintings, however, he also mastered in science, such as anatomy and engineering and he used scientific knowledge into his painting so that his work like Mona Lisa is so perfect and immortal.
3    The ideas of humanities or arts may bring fresh and constructive perspectives and viewpoints to natural science classes. e.g Aristotle,
4    Basic science knowledge is useful and even necessary in our daily life. For some knowledge of the science is a must for everyone living in an age in which science and technology play a dominant role. e.g computer, gravity

90. "College students should be encouraged to pursue subjects that interest them rather than seek programs that promise entry into the job market."

position: agree
1   We should encourage students to choose subjects they are interested in rather than considering too much about the job market.
2    Today’s parents attach too much importance to the job prospects of their children’s education.
3     Empirical evidence suggests that young people are more likely to succeed in a career that interests them.
4     To make young people more creative and passionate in their realms of work, we should….

94. "Universities should require every student to take a variety of courses outside the student's field of study because acquiring knowledge of various academic disciplines is the best way to become truly educated." (例子与80通用)

position: agree
1     True education amounts to far more than gaining the knowledge and ability to excel in one’s major course of study and in one’s professional career.
2     Becoming truly educated also requires sufficient mastery of one academic area to permit a student to contribute meaningfully to society later in life.
3     Nevertheless, the call for a broad educational experience as the path to becoming truly educated comes with one important caveat—in the pursuit of true education students must be careful not to become a dilettante.

106. "All students should be required to take at least one course in ethics, even if taking the course means a decreased emphasis on academic subjects."

position: agree
1     Nowadays, people tend to attach less and less importance to the inculcation of morality.
2     Knowledge of ethics provides students with a correct view of life and career.
3     The goal of education is to help students grow not only intellectually, but also ethically.

5. "A nation should require all its students to study the same national curriculum until they enter college rather than allow schools in different parts of the nation to determine which academic courses to offer."

position: disagree
1    Some kinds of courses are necessary to every individual and it’s better and more effective for the national authority to establish them. However, optional courses are also important for the students of different parts of the country.
2    On the one hand, a national curriculum contributes to preserving a unified national culture and national cohesion.
3    Furthermore, a general curriculum decided by authority rather than by local schools avoids limiting students to a narrow scope of knowledge too early.
4    On the other hand, in a multi-cultural society, different ethnic communities should be given the opportunity to preserve and promote their traditional cultures.
5    It’s beneficial to grant local schools the freedom to offer students some optional courses, which can help the school to build its unique culture charisma.

9.22 学习类(3)

50"In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."

观点:有些需要,有些不需要。
1.        some fields such as engineering, 心理学,MBA,first hand working experience 对教学有利。1.
A. 历史根本找不到相应工作 B 文学,并不一定要有工作经验 C 音乐系的老师有了工作经验并不一定就嫩更提高教学水平。
3.        教学水平的提高不是单方面老师水平的提高,还有相关课程设置,学生素质的提高
4.        总结。。。。

158 The arts (music, dance, visual arts, etc.) are vitally important to students' education and should therefore receive as much emphasis as mathematics, science, reading and other mainstream subjects."

Position: Disagree. Although art education is very important, it should not receive as much emphasis as mainstream subject.
1        Art is education is very important. (1) Art edifies people, and enables them to taste the goodness of life. For example, music, paintings (2) Art helps people rest their mind and find spiritual mind. (3) Art acts as like an indirect teacher of morality, because when people feels the beauty and goodness of life, they will cherish what they have now and won’t try to ruin others happiness.
2        However, over-emphasis on art education is inappropriate. (2) The purpose of education is to teach students basic life skills which prepares them for future society, and therefore the essential task is to teach how to read, write, reason, argue, and to think independently on their own. (2) From a practical point of view, art education is always expensive that not every family may afford. (3) It actually takes a long time to guarantee a good art education, because understanding art needs a lot life experience full of anger, agony, happiness and so on. It may be difficult for young students to appreciate art works in an early age. (4) To promise to enter a job market, one has to focus more on mainstream subjects.
3        In sum…

32 "A school or college should pay its teachers at the same rate in all disciplines, regardless of differences in salaries for related fields in the world outside of school. For example, entry-level teachers in mathematics and in the arts should receive the same pay, even if outside of school, math specialists earn a much higher salary on average than do specialists in the arts."
(采取正面的立场比较容易)
Position: Partially agree. The pay of a teacher should not be determined by what subjects they teach or which field of research they involve in, but rather by their teaching performance, academic achievement, and school leadership.
1        Teachers of different field should not been paid discriminately. (1) It is unfair to do so. They all teach under state-mandated curriculum, why should they be paid less. They do the same amount of work, why should they …? (2) It may lead to debilitating instruction quality. (3) Many teachers may choose to quit their job if they are unequally paid. (4) Education is different from the job market, education to some extent is a moral issue and public career.
2        However, it does not mean all teacher should be paid equally. Teachers should be paid according to their teaching performance, academic achievement, and school leadership. (1) It is helpful to enhance the quality of teaching. (2) The final winner is student though doing so may impose pressure on teachers. (3) Academic achievement should be acknowledged and rewarded (4) School leader should be paid more, such as director and principal.
3        In sum…

34 "Instead of requiring students to take courses in a variety of disciplines—that is, courses ranging from the arts and the humanities to the physical and biological sciences—colleges and universities should allow students to enroll only in those courses that will help prepare them for jobs in their chosen fields. Such concentration is necessary in today's increasingly work-oriented society."

Position: Partially agree. Taking courses in a variety of disciplines is as important as to focus on subject which promises them to enter job market.
1        Taking a variety of courses is very important. (1) Society becomes more complex and life turns more complicated and interconnected. So a good range of knowledge is required. (2) Getting to know more helps to discover one’s talent and interest which may benefit students for a lifetime. (3) It is a kind of mental rest by studying courses which are not their major subjects. (4) The purpose of education is to prepare students for good citizens first, so a good understanding of humanity and art, and ethics may require taking such courses. (5) Future jobs requires more generalists than specialists, because generalists have a comprehensive view of a problem while specialist observe from only a singe perspective.
2        However, over-emphasis on non-major subjects may be misleading. (1) Most students will enter job market, so mastering skills which they may need in the future is the duty of school. (2) Over-emphasis on that may distract students from …, after all society’s prosperity is not driven by historians or humanity experts or people have a good taste of art work.
3        In sum…

98 "Colleges and universities should offer more courses on popular music, film, advertising, and television because contemporary culture has much greater relevance for students than do arts and literature of the past."

Position: School should focus more on classical literature, and also consider providing suitable courses for modern art.
1        Classical art is worth more concern. (1) Survive the critical inspection of time, and should be good and worth studying. (2) Tasting the old art is kind of fun (3) It is the school’s duty to pass down the heritage of a nation and values the society values. (4) Without a truly understanding the old work, students cannot appreciate modern art, and may have no idea why it is called modern art, it does not because the work is created contemporarily but because it has a total different style or understanding.
2        However, in order to make students to understand the time in which they live by examining the contemporary art, school should offer some carefully selected course on popular films, music. (1) Make student updated with the current world. And teach them criteria and value they may evaluate modern works (2) It is a good teaching method to compare modern art with classical art (3) Make classes more attractive to them.
3        In addition, some popular music, films, advertising are not decent enough to be offered in classes. Rap may contain dirty word, abuse, and may arouse or provoke racism, extremism.

9.22 学习类(3)

50. "In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."

position: partly agree
1     It is necessary for some faculty in certain realms to take work outside the academic world. For working experience in relevant professions enables college and university faculty to offer practical instruction to students. However, not all disciplines require teachers to have relevant working experience outside.
2     Faculty who are actively engaged in their fields can come to class with fresh insights and contagious excitement about the issue at hand. e.g. MBA,
3.    By keeping abreast with the changing demands of work as a professional, professors can help students who are serious about pursuing a career in that field to make more informed career decisions. e.g. in education area, .
4    Experience in the field can help a professor ferret out cutting-edge and controversial issues—which might be appropriate subjects for research and publication.
5    However, the teachers in some disciplines such as mathematics, literature, history, philosophy, and so on, may find it difficult to combine their teaching with relevant professional fields.

158. The arts (music, dance, visual arts, etc.) are vitally important to students' education and should therefore receive as much emphasis as mathematics, science, reading and other mainstream subjects."

position: agree
1     Arts are indispensable in our daily life. It, of course, plays a very important role in education. I strongly agree with the assertion that arts should be paid as much emphasis as other so called mainstream subjects in students’ education.
2     Arts will ignite the sparks of human minds, and will spur students to quarry the beauty of the nature.
3    It is an effective way to improve the learning efficiency by introducing the arts to the science and engineering students.
4    Arts should be paid equal attention as mainstream subjects. Students can find out what area they are real interested in through education of different subjects, including mainstream subjects and arts. They also can make great successful career with choosing arts as their future major to pursue.

32. "A school or college should pay its teachers at the same rate in all disciplines, regardless of differences in salaries for related fields in the world outside of school. For example, entry-level teachers in mathematics and in the arts should receive the same pay, even if outside of school, math specialists earn a much higher salary on average than do specialists in the arts."

position: disagree
1     In an ideal condition, teachers in different disciplines should be paid in same salary in school or college. However, in reality, we should consider different conditions of various disciplines.
2    The salary rate teachers received should be related not only to their discipline but also their effort and contribution to the educational course.
3    Absolutely identical rate is unfair. Teachers of some disciplines have to assume more harsh work under worse circumstances.
4    If the differences in salaries for related fields in the world outside of school or college anre dismissed, schools and colleges may have to face the loss of its staff.

34. "Instead of requiring students to take courses in a variety of disciplines--that is, courses ranging from the arts and the humanities to the physical and biological sciences--colleges and universities should allow students to enroll only in those courses that will help prepare them for jobs in their chosen fields. Such concentration is necessary in today's increasingly work-oriented society." (例子与158通用)

position: disagree
1    Schools should pay attention to courses that can help students prepare for their future jobs, while art courses are important for the development of students as well.
2    To begin with, schools should attach enough importance to courses that can help students prepare for jobs in their chosen fields.
3    However, work-oriented course is never incompatible with other courses such as arts, humanities and the like, which also play an important role in one career success.
4    Inter-disciplinary study is crucial for the improvement of either discipline.
5     Though courses of a wide range of disciplines should be made compulsory, sufficient freedom should be granted to students.

98. "Colleges and universities should offer more courses on popular music, film, advertising, and television because contemporary culture has much greater relevance for students than do arts and literature of the past."

position: balanced view
1    Contemporary arts are as important as classic literatures for college and university students.
2    Popular culture is a mirror of society’s impulses and values.
3    Knowledge of popular films, music, and art enables a person to find common ground to relate to other people. It leads to better communication between different subculture.
4    Classical arts, however, well present traditions of a society.
5    Nevertheless, emphasizing the study of popular culture at the expense of studying classical art and literature can carry harmful consequences for students, as well as for society.

9.23学习类(4)

39"The intellectual benefits of attending a university or college are vastly overrated: most people could learn more by studying and reading on their own for four years than by pursuing a university or college degree."

Position: Disagree. For most ordinary students, it is more beneficial for them to be enrolled in a university to have formal and systematic education. But there does exist a few geniuses who could do better by studying on their own. And my opinion is the intellectual benefit is not overstated and society should not encourage students to quit school and study all on their own.
1        It is beneficial for most ordinary students to receive university education. (1) School education is systematic and the curriculums are carefully designed by educational experts and have long been testified as effective. (2) Teacher provides face-to-face guidance and oral explanation is much more efficient than study on one’s own reading books. And teachers may offer experience and warn of common pitfalls. (3) Intellectual benefit comes not only from books, but also from group work which requires collaboration and which teaches students how to function well in a group. And leadership is emphasized and trained in school if students actively involved in student union and school affairs. Simply put, intellectual benefit is not only knowledge or facts printed in our text books but a much larger range of aspects which may cover personality, morality, leadership and so on.
2        Admittedly, every era has some talents and nonconformists who succeed without a regular four year school education. (1) Albert Einstein for example, he quit school in an early age, and he didn’t get into a college or university because he lacked a high school diploma. And Helen Keller didn’t get into a college because of disability and achieve a lot more than those who finished their university education. The other example is Bill Gates, and he quit Harvard when he was a sophomore, and initiated one of the most lucrative companies in the world. (2) Because these extraordinary people do know what exactly know what they want in their life and make it into practice. They believe practice and experience is the best way to get intellectually educated.
3        There are many drawbacks for ordinary people quit school. (1) They don’t have a life goal as clear as those school dropout. (2) They don’t usually have a tough mind as those dropouts. (3) And there are numerous dropouts who are not successful.
4        In sum…

55"Competition for high grades seriously limits the quality of learning at all levels of education."
Position: Competition for high grades will not limit the quality of learning if well controlled and guided, but right to the contrary it promotes learning.
1        Competition is the thing modern people could not avoid. So whether you like it or not, you have to confront it.
2        Competition promotes the quality of learning. (1) In order to get higher marks, one has to understand more deeply, and know more than his or her peers. And this enables the students to consult a great number of bibliographies. (2) People are lazy by nature, so competition for higher grades reminds them seize the time and don’t play much, because a good learning requires certain time spent on it. (3) Apart from grade, there is not proper measure to evaluate the students’ performance. Grade is a quantitative measure on students’ academic performance. (4) Like the Olympic Game, athletes compete for better records than others or than themselves, and the total level of sports is enhanced.
3        However, one cannot deny uncontrolled competition for marks actually do harm to the quality of learning. (1) Lead to cheating, rig, or plagiarism. (2) Students may focus on how to improve marks not to improve learning skill. And they may become a good test machine. They may generalize a theory on how the problems would be put. They focus on how to get the right answer, and give no regard to why it is so. (3) The high pressure to achieve high grades may make student under long term depressed.
4        As a matter of fact, different level of students have different purpose of study.
5        It is the incompleteness and weakness of regulation that actually limit the quality of learning when students compete for higher marks. (1) Consider the Olympic Games. No one would blame the Olympic Game for bringing so much trouble of sport morality, justice because of severe competition for good record. It is the weak regulation that enables undermines the quality of sport.
6        In sum…

100"The pressure to achieve high grades in school seriously limits the quality of learning. An educational environment without grades would promote more genuine intellectual development."

57"The depth of knowledge to be gained from books is much richer and broader than what can be learned from direct experience."
Position: Disagree.

117"The depth of knowledge to be gained from books is richer and broader than what can be learned from direct experience."
晕,雷同的题目

204"We learn through direct experience; to accept a theory without experiencing it is to learn nothing at all."

Position: Partially agree. We learn from both experience and theories on books. It is right to accept a theory by experiencing it, but some theories are too abstract and cannot be justified or verified by experiment because they based on strictly reasoning and ratiocination.
1         We learn through both direct experience and books. (1) Give a brief definition of learning. Learning is a process during which we form our own understanding of the nature, people and the world around us. To do this, we can either read it from the books or feel it in direct experience. (2) Give examples when we learn from direct experience. Consider language learning process for instance, young children, usually under three years old in my observation, learn speaking not by attending language schools or read news paper, they just imitate the sound they hear. Language to them is not language at all, it just a sound to communicate. By directly involved in speaking the language, children quickly master the language with accurate pronunciation. (2) Give example for learning from books and theories. For example, when we learn arithmetic, we start by memorizing simple and basic addition, multiplication, and we learn the law of multiplication. Then we try it out by solving arithmetic problems either in our homework or our daily life when doing shopping.
2        And accepting a theory without thinking whether it might be wrong or without experiencing it sometime may cause problems. (1) Give examples of Copernicus. Practice is the sole criterion of testing truth.
3        However, in many cases, we simply cannot test the theories out at all. (1) Some pure theories are based on ratiocination and cannot be experienced in real life. For example, The Theory of Relativity. And another example is Animal Cognition, the theory is deduced from long term observation and people cannot experience it as an animal. (2) It takes too much time to experience long established theory, for example, it may not be a good idea to experience the earth is round by sailing around the world like Magellan. But we do learn a lot from that theory. And similarly, most theories in micro physics such as quantum mechanics, we have no way to experience it, but it just tested fine in practical world.
4        In sum…

232"The purpose of education should be to create an academic environment that is separate from the outside world. This kind of environment is ideal because it allows students to focus on important ideas without being held back by practical concerns."

Position: Disagree. The purpose is to create an environment in which students could think freely and develop their judgment but not to cut students from the outside world.
1        The purpose of education the author presents is problematic. (1) In my observation, there is almost no such school that separates itself from the outside world. So this suggestion is misleading (2) Cutting up from the outside world does no good to students. Students need not only academic knowledge, but also direct social experience. (3) Separating school from the outside does no good to school because school may need funding from the society. (4) Practical concern does not necessarily hold back student, it may act as a impetus to them because when they sense the fierce competition in the job market, they may work harder to make themselves more competent. (5) Only through challenging other’s ideas and defending their own ideas can students develop their own ideas and would be firmly committed to it.
2        However, it may be an unfortunate truth that students are actually confused with various ideas from the outside world. (1)  Some morality issue (2) Some indecent events in the society.
3.        The purpose of education should be to create an environment in which students could think freely and develop their judgment. (1) It is the educator’s responsibility to let the students feel the world and judge the world on their own. They should not hide the other part of the world from students. (2) What they should provide is the freedom to think and speak.
4        In sum

1、"We can usually learn much more from people whose views we share than from people whose views contradict our own; disagreement can cause stress and inhibit learning."

Position: Disagree. We can learn more from people we disagree than from people we agree…And in another case we can learn new stuff that we don’t know from any people.
1        We can learn from people we agree. (1) Agreement makes people feel cheerful and therefore people are willing to learn
2        But we learn much more from people we disagree. (1) It is true disagreement may cause depression, but this our eagerness for truth makes us ignore it and are curious why people hold different views. In this sense, disagreement does not inhibit learning but facilitate people to go deep into to subject and reexamine their own idea which is also a learning process. (2) Bu exchanging thoughts, we get others thoughts that may excel ours (3) By defending our idea we may come across new findings. And by listening to others, we may find out our fallacy. (4) It is commonsense disagreement exist. And the incidence we come across disagreement is much more likely than we get agreed. So we learn most of the time from the people we hold different views from ours.
3        However, the author ignores there is still another case that sometimes we are totally unaware of some subjects, and have to learn from people who are good at it. In this case we don’t not learn neither from people we agree or people we disagree. And sometimes we learn a lot from books as well.
4        In sum…

122"We owe almost all our knowledge not to people who have agreed, but to people who have disagreed."
类似1

227"To remain vigorous, any academic field needs to be led by truly independent thinkers who are willing to ignore established boundaries and challenge long-standing assumptions."

Position: Partially agree. To think independently is a crucial character for an academic leader. However, leaders who are too independent may become obdurate and fail to listen to other’s advice. After all, collaboration is needed in academic research. In addition, independent leader alone does not make much sense to keep the academic field vigorous, and my opinion is the leader should try to create an academic atmosphere of independent thinking. And it is not the only way to keep academic field vigorous.
1        Think independent is important for an academic leader. (1) Discovery may come from reexamination of long-established assumption. For example, people thought Newton’s three laws of mechanics applied to both macro-scope and micro-scope, however, when people reexamined it, they found Newton’s law applied only to macro-scope, and when it comes to micro-scope, quantum mechanic should replace it. (2) Enfettered in the established assumption people are hard to find new things, because they rely too much on previous findings and are unwilling to think on their own. They falsely consider that academic achievement is the recombination of all previous discoveries. In this case, they may fail to achieve anything because the prerequisite might be fallacious itself.
2        However, getting too independent as to be obdurately independent may bring harm to academic field. (1) It cost time to verify all pre-established theories. If one questions everything in the past, it might go to the other side of polar, although this case is rare. (2) Being independent thinkers may cause people to rely only on their own judgment and are unwilling to listen to others or yield to others. Since academic activities required think independently but act in collaboration.
3        In order to make academic field more vigorous, independently thinking leaders alone cannot change the situation. What is needed is an atmosphere of thinking on one’s own and many other factors have to be taken into account.
4        In sum…

80"All students should be required to take courses in the sciences, even if they have no interest in science."
Agree:
1.        Science is the basis. Our lives are full of science. We will live a better life if we acquire some knowledge about science. E.g.: the theory of ghost and some of the weird phenomena in the nature.
2.        Science helps people to form a critical thinking. E.g.: The math.
3.        Students should not be forced to study too much science if they really do not have the interest. They will just have no achievement.

90"College students should be encouraged to pursue subjects that interest them rather than seek programs that promise entry into the job market."
Disagree:
1.        The students’ aim to be in university is to be better prepared for the job markets.
2.        Their interests are supposed to exert for their best potential so as to create most value for the society. And most of them reveal at the jobs.
3.        We should also focus on the subjects. Only if we mastered all these knowledge, can we find better jobs and create most values.

94"Universities should require every student to take a variety of courses outside the student's field of study because acquiring knowledge of various academic disciplines is the best way to become truly educated."
(同34,专才与通才)

106"All students should be required to take at least one course in ethics, even if taking the course means a decreased emphasis on academic subjects."
Agree:
1.        The ethics is the basis. It helps form a correct philosophy and value. So as help the students learn the emphasis of learning and they will learn harder. E.g.: positive attitude towards the life.
2.        A genus with no ethics will just be a danger for the people and government. She/he might create harmful substances or do harm to the people.
3.        Learning the ethics does not mean the decreased emphasis on the academic, the cooperation might help the other academic subjects. E.g.: religion, ethnics, history

5、"A nation should require all its students to study the same national curriculum until they enter college rather than allow schools in different parts of the nation to determine which academic courses to offer."
Disagree:
1.        The basis curriculum should be the same. They are to help students form a basic concept of study, and popularize the primary information that will always be used for ever. E.g.: reading, math
2.        The curriculum should be separated by the different students’ interests.
3.        The different areas’ conditions differ from the others. The curriculum should also be different considering the local customs and exert the local students’ strong points. E.g.: The LA students might be better at fashion with the influence of the atmosphere from when they are young.

50"In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."
Disagree:
1.        Some courses require the practical experiences and the knowledge would be understood more easily with real cases. E.g.: the law and the management.
2.        Some of the courses are entirely academic. E.g.: the philosophy.
3.        Some of the courses tend to research more, so as not need to be involved in the professions relevant. E.g.: chemistry research or the nuclear research.

158 The arts (music, dance, visual arts, etc.) are vitally important to students' education and should therefore receive as much emphasis as mathematics, science, reading and other mainstream subjects."
Disagree:
1.        The arts can help the students to be more sensitive, and to find the beauty of the nature and the life. So that they can lead a much more positive life.
2.        The mainstream subjects train students to be more critical thinking. E.g.: The mathematics helps the reasoning.
3.        The mainstream subjects teach people how to learn. There is endless knowledge to learn. We are not learning the limited subjects in school. What is more important is to learn how to learn. We are going to learn all our lives by ourselves. E.g.: reading teaches how to read
4.        The cooperation between different subjects. If students can combine the arts and the mainstream subjects together, they can learn much more effectively. The arts sometimes help spark one’s inspiration. E.g.: Holmes played violin.

Disagree: How much a teacher is paid lies in how much value he/she creates.
1. A better professional teacher must teach better than a green hand, So that she/he creates more value for the society, and deserves the better pay. E.g.: A PH.D earns more than a MA.
2. A hot major teacher must have more students. Even though she/he teaches the same quantity as the less hot major teacher does, the total value she/he creates must be more.
3. That the outside world pays more for the math specialists means that the math field might create more value for the society, and it is the same case in school.

34 "Instead of requiring students to take courses in a variety of disciplines—that is, courses ranging from the arts and the humanities to the physical and biological sciences—colleges and universities should allow students to enroll only in those courses that will help prepare them for jobs in their chosen fields. Such concentration is necessary in today's increasingly work-oriented society."(通才和专才)
Agree:
1.        The subjects are combined with each other. Mastery of a variety of the disciplines would help students broaden their view and form the integrated minds. The philosophy involves verbal and mathematics.
2.        The colleges and universities are providing the society with professionals. These people are required to be quite familiar with special skills. E.g.: Software engineering.
3.

98 "Colleges and universities should offer more courses on popular music, film, advertising, and television because contemporary culture has much greater relevance for students than do arts and literature of the past."
Disagree:
1.        The contemporary culture reflects the lives which are closer to the students. The contemporary culture can teach the students how to survive in the contemporary society, so as to be more practical. E.g.: television and advertising
2.        The literature and arts of the past is the gem our ancestors passed down. They consist of the culture and civilization for many years. E.g.: the classics tell us the history and the past lives.
3.        The literature and arts of the past consist of more deep thought while the contemporary cultures are involved in many of the short-sighted views. The theory of the ancient philosopher and the fast food culture.(浮躁)

39. "The intellectual benefits of attending a university or college are vastly overrated: most people could learn more by studying and reading on their own for four years than by pursuing a university or college degree."

position: disagree
1  I can not agree with this assertion. We should admit that there are some drawbacks occurring in university study currently. However, we could not deny the irreplaceable functions of a university education for it play significant role in pursuing one’s dream.
2  For a college education, the subjects are relatively fixed. Though at some extent, compulsory studies will avoid laziness and bring up well-rounded students. For example, a student who has great talent for arts, should absorb some knowledge about history. In the same way, it is better for a science major student to know something of arts. We should clearly realized that sometimes this fixed syllabus will cause rote-learning of students by the purpose of solely pursuing high grades. Degree does not mean everything. It is just a symbol. Even if you have a college degree, you still have to work hard in order achieve career success.
3   However, there are many merits for university study. First of all, schools offer systematical curriculum, qualified staff, libraries, facilities and so on, which are not available to individuals who study on their own.
4   On the other hand, studying with peers arouses competition and cooperation. Moreover, qualified degrees help get a job offer more easily.
5   However, degree does not mean everything. It is just a symbol. Even if you have a college degree, you still have to work hard in order achieve career success.

55. "Competition for high grades seriously limits the quality of learning at all levels of education."

position: balanced view
1     Competition among students for higher grades sometimes limits the quality of learning. However, it does not necessarily have a negative impact on the quality of learning.
2     Admittedly, if education aims solely at cramming students for exams, the quality of learning will undoubtedly deteriorate.
3     However, examinations do help students review their lessons and master what they have learned.
4     Furthermore, the psychological pressure that competition exerts on students is not always harmful. For instance, athletes, such as gymnasts, swimmers, or even sports team, are usually under constant pressure to achieve the best time or best score possible.
5     Above all, we should make a balance between effective learning and grading students to minimize the negative effects of grades rating system.

100. "The pressure to achieve high grades in school seriously limits the quality of learning. An educational environment without grades would promote more genuine intellectual development." (同55)

57. "The depth of knowledge to be gained from books is much richer and broader than what can be learned from direct experience."

position: balanced view
1      Both books and direct experience can bring knowledge to people.
2      The knowledge to be gained from books is important in that it transcends the limitation of personal experience both in time and in space. Systematically arranged, knowledge gained from books, the results of countless other people’s direct experiences, is broader than what one can learn from their direct experience. e.g. Newton
3      However, there is high likelihood that book knowledge may not apply to the particular situation one faces here and now.
4      Therefore, it is always necessary to test the knowledge gained from books through practice. Make a perfect combination of knowledge learned from books and practices.

117. "The depth of knowledge to be gained from books is richer and broader than what can be learned from direct experience." (同57)

204. "We learn through direct experience; to accept a theory without experiencing it is to learn nothing at all." (基本同57)

position: disagree
1     Admittedly, by putting a theory into practice, we can either improve it or prove its truth. e.g. Galilei, driving car, cooking, hundreds of thousands of experiments are the basis for the achievements of every great scientist. operating a computer,
2     Even though direct experience is a most lively and vivid way that we learn things, it is by no means the only way. e.g. indirect experience, swim, everyone can learn to swim, while not everyone can become a swim athlete.
3     However, there is no need for us to experience every theory before accepting and benefiting from it.

232. "The purpose of education should be to create an academic environment that is separate from the outside world. This kind of environment is ideal because it allows students to focus on important ideas without being held back by practical concerns."

position: disagree
1     It is near-sighted to isolate students from the outside world.
2     Admittedly, there are many things which bring negative effect for growing up of students will attract the attention of students.
3     The purpose of academic research and study is to serve the society. The academic action which is isolated from society may be useless and worthless. The ultimate goal of education is to train proficient workers and citizens who can adapt themselves to the society as well as making contributions to the society outside the campus. A common misconception about education is that the so-called “important ideas” students learn at schools have nothing to do with the practical world.
4     Furthermore, students’ knowledge of the outside world contributions to their academic studies.

1. "We can usually learn much more from people whose views we share than from people whose views contradict our own; disagreement can cause stress and inhibit learning."

position: balanced view
1    Agreement will help us in learning, while disagreement can make a promotion for us to learn.
2    Agreement can bring confident to us, thus it is helpful for us in learning. While, a person who is only willing to listen to people that shares his view, is actually looking at only one side of picture. This does inhibit the person from finding out deficiencies and flaws in his thoughts and knowledge. The resultant knowledge may be limited with lacking options of refinement.
3    On the other hand, a person who is learning with open heart and mind by accepting the disagreements of other people will have a broader spectrum of opinions as well as be better positioned to analyze pros and cons of various thoughts. Thus the thoughts and knowledge the person mastered may be more refined and pragmatic.
4      I would say disagreement will inhibit learning of those who are narrow-minded and unwilling to hear things which are against their opinions and thoughts. That is not called an effective method of study. The actual effective one is that make a good consideration about both sides of a coin.
122. "We owe almost all our knowledge not to people who have agreed, but to people who have disagreed." (同1)

227. "To remain vigorous, any academic field needs to be led by truly independent thinkers who are willing to ignore established boundaries and challenge long-standing assumptions."

position: agree with reservation
1     It seems too self-contradictory to require academic leaders to ignore established boundaries and challenge long-standing assumptions. In my opinion, in academic field we need independent thinkers who have the courage to challenge authority as well as making a good use of established theories.
2     There is no doubt that academic leaders should be independent thinkers.
3     Established assumptions can bring great help to academic development.
4     What might be important is the academic leader’s ability to organize the scholars of his field to promote academic development.

是啊,我现在还没做政治类的总结呢,一直没抽出时间。
但真觉得有必要总结一下,不然掌握的不够好,考试的时候容易忘啊。
坚持到底,尽量总结吧,只能这么对自己说了:)
