The nest twenty years from now on, students will not use printed books anymore.
With the development of computer technology and the advent of networks, many people especially young people tend to enjoy reading through new media such as computer, mobile phone and MP3 players rather than traditionally reading printed books. Therefore, some people predict that students will not read printed books anymore in 20 years.
However, I have my contention with this point since in my view there is still a long way to go to complete replace the role of traditional printed books.
To begin with, the first reason for my contention with such prediction lies in that most people are still accustomed to reading traditional printed books. Admittedly, due to the advancement of modern science, there are many electrical version books available on the internet. Combined with ebook reading software like Adobe reader, they do really provide people the latest information and first hand enjoyment. But many people including me feel a sense of uncomfortable. There are maybe 2 reasons for this feeling in my view. Firstly, most people especially some old ones are not accustomed to staring at computer screen for a long time. Actually life experiences reveal me that long time staring at computer screen makes people feel their eyes dry and tired. Secondly, many people especially students are used to making notes directly on the book they are reading using their pens when it comes to reading electrical books, they can not do the same and adjust to the new media even though many reading software provides the function of directly making the notes on the ebooks. And both of these two factors prevent some students completely relying on ebooks. And as a matter of fact, I prefer printing the ebooks which are valuable in my opinion for further reading.
The second reason I have my contention with the prediction is that this prediction seems to neglect a prerequisite for applying ebooks to substitute the traditional printed books, which is the high popularity of the reading tools for ebook such as computer, mobile phone, MP3 players. Actually, people in many places especially for people living in poverty rural areas never get a chance to touch this tool let alone using it to read ebooks and the only means for them to get information is to read printed books. Even when the living condition for these people are gradually getting better, the increased income would be first used to meet their basic needs like food and clothes rather than equip this ebook reading tools, after all for people whose basic living needs are not satisfied, satisfying these basic needs always takes priority. Thus, without the prevalence of ebook reading tool, ebook can never take the place of traditional printed book.
Last but not least reason for my suspicion of the prediction is that the establishment of ebook has to face the problem of protecting property of writers and publisher which puzzles almost all electrical publish products such as music, movie and book. And now a days many electrical books available on the internet are just the scanner version of its original printed version, and are never authorized by the writer and publisher so that the property of writer and publisher is lack of protection which would definitely impair the development of ebook. In this way, to better develop the market of ebooks, more rules and implementations need to be proposed, without which the development of ebook would not be as smooth as many people expect let alone completely changing the role of printed book.
In sum, there is a long way to go to develop the ebook thus the role of traditional ebook would not be altered in the next 2 decades. |
