WORDS: 524 TIME: 01:14:21 DATE: 2009-3-8 20:53:26
The speaker's claim fails to be inclusive, for its emphasizing only one part of the importance of studying history. In my observation, to widely study of history not only has value when it is relevant to our daily lives, but also would make great sense to improve the cutural quallities of the masses of our society.
To begin with, admittedly, the study of history with no doubt would give valuable guidance to people's daily lives. By gathering information from the past, mordern people have accumulated great deal of expriences to realize the regulations and to explain the phenomenon and, even more inspiringly, to predict the coming events. To support this point one need look no further than the stock markets. Experienced stockholders always decide their next step by analyzing the stock quotation which reports the condition about the past. Another example also persuative is about the nature disasters. From the ancient time, people has become aware of the nature disasters such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Nowadays, people have studied large quantities of records about earthquakes and volcanic eruptions in history, so that after long time researching, people are able to predict some of them before they occur to avoid heavy damages.
Nevertheless, arguing that only the history relevant to our daily lives has value is obviously narrow and shortsighted. Sometimes, other than directly, the study of history would influence the people's lives in inperceptible ways. By summarizing the lessons and experience of the past, the improvement of the modern society would accelerate avoiding duplicating the mistakes made before. The research of the ozone holes could be a vivid example illustrating the importance of studying history. When it was reported that the harmful ozone holes occuring recently, the whole world realized the importance of protecting the ozone sphere. It was the study of the history of the forming process of the ozone holes which lead to the conclusion that the ozone holes were caused by over using the conventional refrigerator. As a result, new type of refrigerators are being producing which would do no harm to the ozone sphere. A even more persuative evidence could be found about the world war. It was the memory of the tragedy which keeps warning every citizens and political leaders that how valuable peace is. In other words, the history teaches people to cherish the peaceful lives.
Furthermore, the value of studying history is far beyond daily lives. Through learning the achievements of the great men in history, great cultures would be nurtured and the cultural qualities of the masses would improve quite a lot. Inspired by the persistent effort fighting for the freedom of the African-Americans, one could be more diligent when working. Moreover, the story about Mohandas Gandhi's insisting his principles would teaches the people to keep integrity.
To sum up, it is unfair for the speaker to emphasize the importance of studying history only relevant to daily lives. Supported by all the foregoing evidences, it could be obviously seen that the study of history not only has great value providing important guidance in our daily lives, but also contributes to our society to a great extent. |
