ISSUE 120
So much is new and complex today that looking back for an understanding of the past provides little guidance for living in the present.
The statement of the value of history tends to raise a variety of issues on sociology and philosophy. The speaker asserts that to understand the history offers little benefit in searching for the solutions to the problems within today’s world. It might be tempting to agree with the speaker on the position that today’s world is different from the past and the experience of other ages seems not able to cope with today’s complexity. However, the speaker makes a giant omission that, within the research of history, behind the surface flexible, there stands the unchangeable rules of the nature and society, which help to deal with today’s compelling problems and even mirrors the limitation to the self-cognition of ourselves.
History is worthy of learning, especially on the firm lessons that we can absorb in order to direct us to the solutions of today’s problems. Admittedly, the increasing complexity, resting on the innovation of the science and technology, distinguishes our society from any other ones ever existed on history, as no one in 1960s was able even to dream of Wi-Fi, GPS, and i-phone. After all, no one would allege that history covers all wisdom of human beings, since the wisdom employed to tackle with the unknown future majorly comes out of the unyielding creativity, not that frequently from the samples that we may refer to on history. However, the history, if carefully and consciously explored, can benefit us on the impact of some event, fundamental of certain phenomenon, and value of behavior, rather than simply on the event, phenomenon, and behavior itself. The former scenario is always described as parts of the regular pattern of human nature, society, and nature forces. As a belief, formed as early as the boom of civilization, that all of the events, phenomena, and
behaviors are destined by a school of laws, the history also bears and reflects the laws. Therefore, the analysis of history on its regulations and principles, hidden behind the surface of history, just as the stage where the regulations perform, and the figure where the principles appear, in a way lucid, may help us more likely to acquire a clear recognition to the world at present. Several instances below support my position.
History help us to address the social ills in various aspects, since history tends to indicate us the cardinal truth of the world, yet neglected too often. The problems of equality of minority seem to be as old as democracy, and never come to solutions. The inequality between ethnicities, genders, religions keeps triggering the antagonism among societies, leading to the painful oppression and bloody conflicts. Yet, supposing we have ever taken a glance at the history, we would comprehend that attempts to eliminate inequality through violence invariably fail. Why? The real equality is rooted in acceptance and tolerance free from any forms of violence, in light of the anti-apartheid efforts of Nelson Rolihlahla Mendala in South Africa. Unfortunately, such a truth is always obscured; even sinking into oblivion and the violence still places an obstacle in the way to equality. As the equality is too lacerated to permit a world safety to dwell, in that hatred and resentment is burnt among people lit by the abuse of violence to suspend the resistance from the minority. Another example on the over-exploit of the nature resources is a problem more intractable. On history, the hypothesis that the nature resources tend to be infinite, always brings about miserable disasters to our ancestors. Until now, in some parts of the World, however, the inhabitants actually shut their eyes to the endangered balance of the eco-system, to gain the possession and establish the so-called prosperity. To recall the tragedy on history, the atrophy and even extinct of certain cultures and ethnicities, such as Loulan in China and Maya in North America, the prosperity today in some areas seems doomed to fallen-down, since the original balance of nature is so amazingly subtle and complex, once broken, never recovered, as a lesson taught by history.
Through the piercing analysis of the history, yet, particularly on the hidden laws of human, society, and nature forces, it seems that the history just repeats its norm in shape of different events, at different moments. In fact, the regular pattern of history reflects the destiny of human beings. From my perspective, the arrogant of each person, one of the poor creatures on the planet, living in the crave of ignorant and lust, defines the destiny that one’s life just as a walking shadow, wine in and wit out, a poor player struts and frets. The history witnessed evolvement, prosperity, and atrophy of individuals and societies, and guaranteed its regulations silently. Yet, woefully, it seems that human beings seldom take the lessons from history seriously, we shall never bear the same loss if else. Hence, the lessons taught by history are deserved to occupy a more significant place, if we intend to leave the unfathomable and lifeless abyss of the enduring survival dilemma we cursed to involve, to cope with the problems today, and even to reach the heaven that the saints and poets had imagined.
To sum up, in terms of how to solve the problems to the society I agree that the past is of the great value, for it mirrors the weakness of human nature and implies the avenue to solutions. Although we are always masked to the laws that history bears, not even mention to grasp the laws and get rid of the marsh of enduring problems of society, the lessons from history still point the way to a better future.
