1. This statement in fact includes 2 claims:

I disagree either.
2. About the first claim: Criticism tends to undermine and constrain the artist’s creativity.
Admittedly, criticism may influence the artists’ creativity largely, because the artists have to consider others’ views on their artistic works.
However, critics 在很多时候对于艺术家创作艺术是有很大帮助的，评论家的评论会帮助艺术家promote themselves in creating artistic works.
3. About the second claim: Artists should pay little attention to their critics.
正是因为评论家对艺术家的创作力在某种程度上起到了积极的作用，所以艺术家不可以轻易地忽视评论家们的评论。对于那些肤浅无意的评论当然可以不去理会，但是对于一些有价值的评论还是要好好考虑一下的，但不能盲从。
4. 评论家闷得评论对艺术家的创造力在某种程度上时产生了影响，但很多时候都是积极的影响，并非如speaker所说的那样undermine了艺术家的creativity，因而，对于评论家的评论，艺术们应该予以考虑，但不可盲从。

对于艺术家而言，是他们创造了艺术，例如：贝多芬的交响乐，梵高的向日葵、莎士比亚的文学等。如果没有他们又何来艺术、何来critics、又何来lasting value呢？

对于critcs：

critics，作为experts，帮助人们欣赏和理解艺术，没有critics 很多作品都不会被人们欣赏。一部不能被人们欣赏和理解的作品就犹如在旷野里的悲歌。

artists 通过critics的反馈可以更进一步地提高自己的creativity， 从而create出来的works也将更永久地被人们欣赏和理解。
③
critics可以帮助人们过滤掉不好的艺术品，save people’s time and attention.
3. In sum，artists and critics 都重要。


The speaker claims that it is the artists who create the things of lasting value, but not the critics. At first glance of this assertion it seems convincing but actually not. It cannot convince me at least.

I concede that it is indeed the artists who create the lasting value. After all, were it not for Beethoven, how could we enjoy the mighty harmonies of the symphony Fate? Without Van Gohg, how can we take enjoyment on the deep blues and sunny yellows displayed on the great painting Sunflower? But for Shakespeare, how can we share that many wonderful plays? No artists, no artistic works, not to mention the lasting value and the critics who give comments on the artistic works. Though the artists create the splendid works, the critics’ efforts shouldn’t be ignored since they also contribute a lot to the various artistic works.

Firstly, as experts, they help people understand the innate spirit of the works. Not being understood, a work of art is just like a sorrow song sung by a solitary singer in Sahara. As we know, not everyone has the background knowledge of arts, so one may feel lost when he/she faces a piece of artistic work. But with the help of the critics with certain professional knowledge, he/she can understand the meaning of the work well. For instance, when Van Gogh first accomplished the great work Sunflower, most people didn’t understand the innate meaning of it and it was not accepted by the society then. But later, with the help of the critics, people became increasingly understand the restless passion symbolized by the flaming yellow and dark blue used by Van Gogh. And finally, this made the splendid masterwork be accepted

Secondly, as a commentator, the critic can give the artists the feedbacks on their works. With the feedbacks, the artists can promote their creativity when they compose an artistic work. In any case, no one can engage for that he/she can accomplish a piece of great work which needs no more improvement. Also no one can certitude that the works he/she has composed meet the society’s aesthetic and value standard. Only with the help of the critics, can he/she perceive his/her works in others’ perspectives, and then find the way to create outstanding works of lasting value.


In addition, it is the critics who prevent us from wasting time on the nonsensical so-called artistic works. They are just like filters which can leach the meaningless works don’t deserve our time and attention. As time goes, numerous films, songs and novels arise. In front of so many amusing works, we always feel confused since we don’t have that much time and energy to appreciate every one. Thanks to the critics, we can choose the worthy ones affirmed by them to entertain ourselves. Without the help of the critics, it’s really hard to imagine how will the entertainment undertakings develop since the producers may possibly ignore the negative influences, just for making maximum benefits. That will make us feel more confused and also make our society fall into disorder.

To sum up, without artists, there won’t be any artistic works or critics, not to say the lasting value. However, when the artists create their works the critics also contribute a lot to making the works lasting value. They both together do us good while they creating the things of lasting value.
