As the speaker claims, arts, such as painting, music, literature and so forth, is an objective mirror reflecting hidden ideas and impulses of a society with which I fundamentally agree the issue for the reason for that art is mostly regarded as a symbol of a society, representing developments in different aspects what is covered under common phenomena.
The first question is: what is the real value of arts? In my opinion, arts reveal the hidden history of a society to some extents.
To begin with, Arts show the different aspects of a society. Artists create art works to illustrate their private emotions; these emotions are mostly established by the social environment and populace’s attitudes toward them, which deeply unfold the economic situation, social culture and human nature of that time. Thus, paintings, films, potteries and photographs are all byproducts of a society. By researching these art productions, people can thoroughly understand the beneficial and detrimental aspects of a society. The Modern Times of Chaplin, for example, intensively expose the negative effects of a mechanized society, which turn workers into human puppets. The Renaissance painting of a Madonna And Child and other opuses at that time, reflects a medieval social phenomenon: artists mostly serve the dominate classes such as religion, king and aristocrat. These discoveries, are crucial for us in studying the fully history of a society.
Moreover, incorporeal forms of arts, such as literature, music and so forth, promote the development of a society. The spirits, like struggling with obstacles, sharing with populace, pass on from generation to generation in literature; the virtues, like diligence and humility, are sung from one place to another in hymns. Thus, people are influenced by the arts, so they change the society and history. Jane Eyre, for instance, describes a story about a revolution of women's love. As a result, quite a few women liberated themselves to their true happiness. Beethoven's symphony illustrates the real connotation of Endurance to listeners, and they become more patient. Arts change people's heart, thus promote the development of a society and its history.
Unfortunately, not all the art works contribute to the progress of human beings. We must distinguish between the negative but revolutionary opuses and scurrilous, harmful products. The potboilers may be results of twisted emotions of some artists, or more probably, they are under the pressure of dominate classes. Dominators may be somehow understood arts would be a best way to disseminate their paramount power, so they urge some artists to create some products. Take Adolf Hitler as an typical example. To spread his will and power, he forces artists to create works eulogizing Germanic people and defaming the Jewish. These products distort the real situation and mislead people. Those arts undoubtedly hinder the way to build a more democratic society.
To sum up, arts reveal hidden ideas and impulses of a society. They can even promote the development of a society. However, if arts are misled by someone, they cannot reflect the real society. |
