TOPIC: ISSUE130 - "How children are socialized today determines the destiny of society. Unfortunately, we have not yet learned how to raise children who can help bring about a better society."

The assertion above places the destiny of human society wholly on the socialization of children today, furthermore, it made a conclusion, which is not very optimistic, that we have not yet find out how to raise children into better holders of a better society.

Frankly speaking, I have to admit that I was sort of convinced, on the first glance, by this whole argument. For I have been reading a lot of materials, both in paper form and on the internet, telling people what a big mistake and failure our education has become, and how badly the children are being shaped by this fast developing world. These materials, be them exaggerating or not, describes this society we live in like a huge machine, ruthless, violent, greedy and getting more effective everyday, the education within which is just manufacturing scores of mindless gears that would only make the machine even more effective. One would probably shudder at the thought of what this society would become at last, like a little piece frightening novel, isn't it?

However, when it comes to me that the future of human being is burdened on the not-very-predictable outcome of the socialization of children today, I sense there are some points missed by the speaker already. Such conclusion about human society just seems too simple. Our civilization, after all the thousands of years of developing, have been through too much, so much that we have developed such things as study on history, there ought to be more that could lay a hand on the wheel: religion, cultural differences, ideology evolution, science and technology development, and even an essay written by a Nobel winner, you name it.

Nevertheless, the assertion could be more validly taken as trying to show people the importance of the socialization of children, which, still undeniably, will contribute a great deal to the future of our society. The young people today, in predictable time, will be the teachers, artists, doctors, scientists, and don't forget the politicians, that consists the whole society, or at least the main functioning part of it. We all know the importance of education, and so do the Japanese after World War II who had successfully transformed their educational invest into the nation's power for recover, thus it needs no further discussion about why the speaker put that much attention on the socialization of children. Without doubt, it is important, although not that determinative.

Yet I still recall those frightening materials assailing the current educational system, do they make some points or are they only trying to drag my eyeballs? Unfortunately, as the assertion stated above, I find them do have their points. The original education of mankind, take the ancient Greek Academy for instance, defined their aim as "the search for real truth and the construction of a spiritually and intellectually rational mind". In simple words, our great ancestors sought their way for the understanding of mankind and nature. Unlike our modern educationers, with whom their students took the education system as training for skillful workers or professional managers. That's where the unfortunate thing lies, we have lost the true aim of education, and put it brutally into the market. It is something silly like retrieving a flower for the Alps top and then changing it for only several gold coins, neglecting the glory within it.

Some say the new contents of education, differing from the ancient form, is an inevitable outcome of human civilization progress. I could, by any means, agree with such a saying. Moreover, I see much more in education than what we're doing with it today.
