ISSUE88 - "Technologies not only influence but actually determine social customs and ethics."
It is an era of science and technology. In this statement, the speaker asserts that technologies not only influence but determine social customs and ethics as well. From my point of view, the answer to this question is not a simple yes-or-no. Generally, I tend to agree that technology does influence our society from huge lots of aspects, including customs and ethics; yet I oppose the opinion that our social customs and ethics are determined by it. To begin with, it is undeniable that technological advancement has deeply changed people's lives, and to a certain extent impacted on social customs and ethics. Along with the increasing pace of life caused by the dramatic progress of technology, many traditional habits and has been forgotten in modern society. Chinese people, for example, were used to eating dinner together---during which they offer wishes to each other---in every traditional festival; today, however, so few family members are able to get together when traditional festival is coming for everyone is engaged in his own business and meanwhile a wish can be easily transported during advanced instant communication tools. Moreover, not only does the influence technologies exert on social customs embody in people's daily lives, but its changes, in some sense, the standard of social morality and ethics as well. The moral standards, which were so different in the previous time, are becoming more and more similar all over the world, since the advanced technology approaches serves to provide people around the world with immense amount of opportunities of contacting the values and judgments of people from other cultures or societies. People in eastern countries, for instance, will never regard wearing sexy clothes as an immoral behavior for women after gradually understanding and receiving the aesthetic judgments from western society through a wide variety of modern means of information transportation. However, in spite of the considerable influence technologies set upon our society, social customs and ethics are unlikely to be determined by it, for discrepancy among cultures and mores will never disappear no matter how advanced the technological level has achieved. Cultural discrepancy, which is determined by the profound history and tradition, and sometimes even by the genetic connection, serves as a core that shape and control the essential acts of people under a certain culture. Although people in eastern countries can change their views on women's clothes, in fact, they will not change their fundamental trait of conservative and reserved. An obvious evidence that can support this point of view is the different attitudes toward love between girls from eastern and western countries. On most occasions, the former are tend to conceal their fondness of a boy while the latter are inclined to express their feeling of a boy bravely since their culture tells them to do so. To sum up, huge lots of facts demonstrates that both social customs and ethics have been influenced by the development of modern technology; yet technologies are unable to exert a determinate effect. While some people may still remain unconvinced, the reason that mentioned above should at least make them aware of the complexities of the issue under discussion. |
