In the lecture the professor find the argumentations in the article unconvincing to support the opinion that Marco Polo had never traveled to China. She has some other explanations about the evidence mentioned in the article.

Firstly, it is reasonable and understandable for Marco Polo to use Persian name of Chinese or Mongolian locations and directions. In thirteen to fourteen century, Persian was the widely used language in trade, so Marco Polo might possibly borrow the names from Persian source.

Secondly, the fact that Marco Polo omitted to write down some popular practices in China does not necessarily disapprove the point that he never traveled to China. The professor mentions that tea drinking was popular only in southern China at that time. And northern China, where Marco Polo mainly stayed, had not developed such practice when he was there.

Thirdly, no evidence in the original records does not(逻辑有错误) mean that Marco Polo had ever served at the court of the Mongol ruler, or that he was never appointed to be the post of governor of Yang Zhou. It is highly possible that Marco Polo was referred to a different name. And it was common for people not to use real name in records at that time. Or perhaps the records about Marco Polo had simply lost.

In conclusion, the professor does not agree with the viewpoint in the article. And she uses different evidence and argumentations to cast doubts on the points made in the article.

都写到了,只是要是提提reading的内容会更好~

The lecturer thinks the aguments of the article is unconvincing that Marco Polo had never been to China. The article lists some evidences, but the lecturer gives different explainations.

First of all,the article thinks Marco Polo failed to pick up personal Chinese name, which cast a doubt on Marco Polo's credibilty as a traveler to China. However, the lecturer the is large possiblity to explain this, for instance, maybe the name mentioned in his book was very normal at that time.

Secondly, the article believe he should to reference the popular culture tea in China. But the lecturer explain that the tea was popular in southern China, while Marco Polo travelled the most part of northern China where tea was not very popular.

Finally, the article point out that there was not any original records to indicate Marco Polo served at the court of the Mongol ruler as he said in his book. The lecturer believes there are other explainations and possiblities.Maybe Marco Polo did not use his real name during his served time,or maybe the records about  him just lost during centuries. These reasons all understandable. In sum up,the article fail to give us convincing evidence that Marco Polo had not travel to China during the Mongol time.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? It is more important for a teacher to help students gain self-confidence than to teach them specific knowledge?

Teachers are one of the main pillars of a sound and progressive society. Teachers pass on not only knowledge but also values to students. This may lead to a discord: which duty of teacher is more important—to help students gain confidence or to teacher them specific knowledge. I believe it is more important and necessary for teachers to help students become confident in themselves for the following reasons.

To begin with, the ultimate object of teaching is to enable student to become a sound person instead of giving them all the knowledge. No matter what the students are going to become and no matter what lives they will lead in the future, self-confidence is the first requisite to any undertakings. Without realization of self-confidence in one's ability, one can hardly achieve any goals, even if he/she has learned abundant specific knowledge from teachers. Besides, imparting specific knowledge to students is not a goal of teaching. Learning knowledge is a lifetime thing. So teachers should teach their students to fish rather than give them fish. And self-confidence benefits students whenever they are fishing. In short, self-confidence is the first step of everything, including learning knowledge.

Secondly, school is the most crucial places where students gain confidence. Some may argue that students can build up self-confidence in various places and from different people’s instructions like parents, so it is not necessarily the teachers’ job. However, such people ignore the importance of school education in a children’s growth. For students going to full-time school, they spend most of their time at school with peers. School provides many ways for them to build up self-confidence, from classroom learning, to physical courses, and even interest clubs. And teachers are the unique and necessary participants in such activities to direct, instruct, and assist students. In brief, teachers’ special role in school education determines their priority to help students establish self-confidence.

Finally, students’ self-confidence largely decides their study. On one hand, self-confidence decides the learning desire of students. A teacher who is attempting to teach knowledge without inspiring the students with confidence to learn is hammering on cold iron. If a teacher preaches all the time without considering the learning ability and desire of students, undoubtedly it is fruitless or even counterproductive. The reading article questions the giant-impact theory about the formation of Moon, and maintains that the theory is weak. However, the professor does not agree with the viewpoints made in the reading and he thinks its argumentations unconvincing.

Firstly, the fact that there is no trace of impact does not necessarily means that the material of the Moon is not from the Earth. The impact happened more than four billion years ago, and any trace could be erased by the force of nature. The rock plates’ collisions have largely changed the surface of the Earth. So the trace of the giant impact can be already disappeared long time ago.

Secondly, the fact that the rocks on the Moon contain little water is explainable and reasonable. When the Moon formed, the heating material ejecting from the Earth was so heated that the temperature was extremely high. The water on the Moon may have already vaporized into space. So it is not surprised to find that the rocks on the Moon contain little water.

Thirdly, the density of the Moon's core should not be compared with the density of the Earth's core. Because the Moon is formed by the material of the Earth's surface, its density should be compared with the density of the Earth's surface. And the Moon's density is the same as the Earth's surface. This finding further supports the giant-impart theory.

In conclusion, the professor uses evidence and argumentations to challenge the doubts of giant-impact theory made in the reading.

Teachers are one of the main pillars of a sound and progressive society. Teachers pass on not only knowledge but also values(social value更清楚点) to students. This may lead to a discord: which duty of teacher is more important—to help students gain confidence or to teacher them specific knowledge(这个句子用的好). I believe it is more important and necessary for teachers to help students become confident in themselves for the following reasons.

To begin with, the ultimate object(目的是objective) of teaching is to enable student to become a sound person(这个sound用在这里不合适吧) instead of giving them all the knowledge. No matter what the students are going to become and no matter what lives they will lead in the future, self-confidence is the first requisite to any undertakings. Without realization of self-confidence in one's ability, one can hardly achieve any goals, even if he/she has learned abundant specific knowledge from teachers. Besides, imparting specific knowledge to students is not a goal of teaching(这句话好像有些绝对了). Learning knowledge is a lifetime thing. So teachers should teach their students to fish rather than give them fish. And self-confidence benefits students whenever they are fishing(用一般现在时就可以了). In short, self-confidence is the first step of everything, including learning knowledge.

这段观点想说教书终极目标是使学生变得坚强,或者说全面。但后面又说imparting specific knowledge to students is not a goal of teaching,感觉把观点给转移了。

School is the place where they make progress and get prepared for future life in society. School provides many ways for them to build up self-confidence, from classroom learning, to physical courses, and even interest clubs(社团association). And teachers are the unique and necessary participants in such activities to direct, instruct, and assist students. In brief, teachers’ special role in school education determines their priority to help students establish self-confidence.

感觉这段把老师说少了

Finally, students’ self-confidence largely decides their study. On one hand, self-confidence decides the learning desire of students. A teacher who is attempting to teach knowledge without inspiring the students with confidence to learn is hammering on cold iron. Letting a friend make a mistake is better than saying or doing something that may destroy the friendship.

Friends are people who like us in spite of our faults and who listen to us and tell us the truth. So in my opinion, I strongly maintain that we should point out a friend’s shortcomings and help him/her prevent from making mistakes.

To begin with, it violates the principles of real friendship that knowing a friend is going to do something wrong without reminding him/her. It is said that whenever you need to hear the bitter truth about yourself, go to your real friend. Real friends will never lie to you, just to please you and win your favors. So to be a true friend we should timely tell a friend when he/she is wrong. Although our actions or words may be harsh, they are really needed and helpful. Besides, just think it over, we certainly hope our friends be honest with us, and correct us when we are at fault. After all, being foolish in front of one or two friends is so much better than being laughed at by a crowd. In brief, holding back opinions about our friends’ shortcomings never makes us a real friend.

In addition, the results of non-interference may be more serious than telling the truth. On one hand, seeing our friend suffer from his/her own mistake, we may feel guilty and remorse. On the other hand, our friends may blame us for not correct them before they make mistakes. Here is an example of my own. At the end of last quarter my friend Sue was too busy to cope with her anthropology paper. So she just downloaded a paper and did little change. I was her study partner and found out about it, but I did not dissuade her from handing that copied paper for I thought she might be unhappy. However, when she was finally caught and seriously punished, I was and still feel regret that I did not stop her and let her almost ruin her reputation. In a word, comparing to the worse results of standing by, it is better for us to do or say something before our friends make unredeemable mistakes.

Furthermore, it is possible for us to be candid with our friends while not harming the friendship. We can use some strategies to help us be a helpful and welcome friend. For example, we can speak or do things with the intent of caring for our friends, not in a way that hurts them or brings them down. Just remember not to be rude and degrading, and put on a “sugar coat” for our rough but helpful advice. Another way is to be willing to listen and help our friends. It is unwise to point our friends’ flaws and then walk away, leaving them alone in trouble. Our friends may have some feedback or need further help regarding what we have said or done. In short, following such methods we can actually strengthen our friendship while being honest to our friends.

To sum up, I can hardly agree that we can sacrifice the integrity and essence of friendship in the name of protecting the friendship. In the long run, frankness and openness is the key to a healthy friendship, while insincerity and “white” lies are the deal breakers.
