TOPIC: ISSUE16 - "Although many people think that the luxuries and conveniences of contemporary life are entirely harmless, in fact, they actually prevent people from developing into truly strong and independent individuals."

According to the speaker, the luxuries and convenience of the contemporary life prevent people from developing into truly strong and independent individuals though many people think they are harmless. I concede that there are a host of advantages this kind of life brings to modern people. However, in my point of view, it is rightly that people nowadays depend more on the luxury and convenient life, and it not only prevent individuals' development, but also lead damage to the ecosystem and the environment.

Admittedly, people benefit a lot from the contemporary life which is called luxury and convenience. With developed communication nets, transportation devices, advanced machines and various entertainments, people can save time and have more leisure than before. In the previous years, people in different areas can contact with each other only through letters which takes a quite long time and the letters are easily to be lost. Distinguished from that time, nowadays there are a variety of new ways such as e-mails, mobile phones and some on-line chat tools like MSN, all of which can make people communicate immediately and instantly. Also, cars, maglev trains airplanes and other modern transportation lead to a revolution in the transportation, and make it possible for people to travel from one place to another in single days. Meanwhile, people have various recreations for the invention of television, personal computer and so forth. Surely advances in these areas belonged to the contemporary life provides people efficiency, comfort and leisure.

Having conceding the advantages of the contemporary life, we can not ignore its disadvantages. First of all, the widely use of these advances threatens people’s health. On the one hand, the personal computers, mobile phones and the like produce radium when people using it, which will disturb the function of some organs and even, lead to heart attacks and cancer. On the other hand, the development of the transportation devices deprives peoples’ chances of having sports. People using elevators instead of going up and down stairs, even they are living in the low floors; When going out people no longer walk on foot by riding cars, no matter how short they distance they need to cover. For the lacking of sport, people are vulnerable to the diseases and tend to be tired easily. All of these have become the obstacle for people to build them up.

Similarly, the breakthrough in machines substitute people’s thinking as well as the hand work, which render people more dependable when offering people convenience. As washing machines have done all the washing works of people, people now are losing their ability to wash the clothes and dishes by themselves. As the computers have undertaken all the calculating works, people now can’t do the simple aggregation without computers. As the quick access to the information on the Internet, people now are lazy about writing essays on themselves and just to copy what have been on the Internet. As the widely use of electronic dictionaries, people now remember fewer and fewer words for they can turn to the dictionary whenever they want. By the wide spread of modern machines, people’s capacity of doing work and thinking independently are fading away.

Moreover, enjoying the luxury and convenient life, people are destroying the environment and ecosystem at the same times. As the cost of luxury life, many species are endangering and the environment is being polluted heavily. For example, it is a fashion to wear furs as clothes, for that reason, large amount of wild animals such as fox, tigers and bears have been killed, which made them on the edge to extinct. In addition, seldom can we see the clear sky in the city for the air pollution made by large number of cars and trucks. Furthermore, the forestry is declining as people hewing the trees for heavy using of papers. So people are paying severe cost for maintaining this contemporary life.

To sum up, conceding that how great convenience and comfort the contemporary life brings to people, I can see there are far more disadvantages behind this luxury life which are not good for individuals’ development. People live such lives do little sports and are subject to diseases. What’s more, they depend heavily on the advanced machines which substitute almost all the thinking and hand work. Plus, many animals are endangering and the environment have been damaged for the cost of this luxury life.
