第二十四篇(艺术史furniture design
The next style of furniture design I’d like to discuss is (to)Shaker furniture design. The Shakers are (in the relagist school) a religious group that flourished in the 18th (in the) United States. At that time, the Shakers lived in their own communities and believed (them)in living simply. This ideal of (simplicities is)simplicity extended to (the)their furniture design, (and)as you will see.

Because the shape of their furniture wasn’t supposed to be (unnecessary and)unnecessarily decorative, the furniture’s surface became the only place to create (them)visual pleasure. Shake furniture used light-(colour)colored woods like pine, maple, or cherry. it (also) was often (pained)printed blue, green, or yellow.

As (this light)these slides show, some of their most interesting pieces were made (of)for the work place. Notice that this sewing table has drawers that can be (put)pulled out from the either side. This (picture)feature enables two people to (solve it)sew at the same time. Likewise, if you look closely at this (light)slides of counters and workbenches. You’ll notice that (this)these pieces (was)were also designed to be used for more than one side. Thus, several people would be able to work at one time.

Nowadays, Shaker furniture design’s (enjoy)enjoying a revival. (This)The simple but stylish furniture made by Shakers (are)is popular among (current)affluent collectors, including such celebrities as Bill Cosby and Oprah Winfrey. (as you see)As you’ve seen, the plainness of Shaker furniture makes (this)it strangely modern (and appearen)in appearance. In fact, (there are steer design)their austere, minimalist designs have influenced several modern furniture designers, some of whom (we’d)we’ll discuss next.
You can get it if you really want.

看半天不知题目在哪,于是我自选了。从后往前做
TPO14L1
Hi im looking for this book, the American judicial system and I cant seem to find it anywhere. I need to read the a charpter for my political science class.
Let me check in the computer. Eh does not seen to be checked out or on reservedand it’s not on reserve you've check the shelf
ves
I assum. yeah I even chech other shelves and tables next to
where near the book should be.

Well itis stillhere in the library so people must be using it.Youknow they seenit seems to be a very popular book type tonight. We shelfed show six copies and none are checked outyet you didn't even fine one copy on the shelves. It is a big class?
May be about 65? Well you should ask your professor to put some of the copies on reserve. You know about the reserve system right? I know that you have to read reserve books in the library and that you have time limits. But I don't think did not know I could ask the professor to put a book on reserved I mean I think thought the professor made that kind of decisions at the beginning of the semester.
Oh they can put the book on reserve at any time during the semester.
You know reserving book seems a bit unfair. What aboutif someone aren’tis not in the class wants to use the book?易错 That‘s why I said some copies.
Well iwill certainly talk to my professor about it tomorrow. What will II am gona do tonight?
I guess you can walk around the poli sci 易错and wait and look at the book to reshelf and look at the book waiting to be re-shelved.
They are seem to be more than normal. We are a little short of staff right now someone quit recently.so things aren’t getting resheled as quickly as usual. I don't think they’ve hired
the replacement yet so the unsheld books can
get a bit out of hands. this may sound were
a bit wiered. But I’ve been thinking about getting a job.

I never work in a library before. That is not the requirment the job might still be open. the beginning of the semester .we were swamped with applications. I guess every one who wants a job has a job one by now
What can you tell me about the job?
Well we work between 6 and 10 hours a week so it‘s a reasonable amount. Usually you can pick the hours we want to work. But since you’d be starting so late in the semester,I’m not sure how they would work for you. You get the normal university rate for student employees. so who do I talk to I guess you talk to the Doctor Jam, the head librarian she does the hiring.

刚弄完。。。好累
Tpo14L2
Weve said that the term cognition refers to the mental states like knowing and believing and to mental processed that we used to arrive at those states. So for example reasoning is a cognitive process. So itis processtion perception we use information that we proceive through our senses to help us make decitionsdecision to arrive believesbeliefs and so on. and then there are memory and imagination which relate to the knowlege of things happened in the past or may happen in the future.
So …..are all in internal mental senses
processes that lead to knowing and believing yet each of these processes hadhas limitations and can lead us to hold mistaken believes or make faulse predictions.take memory for example maybe you have heard the study in which people hear a list a relative words let’s say a list of
different
kinds of food
fruit. after hearing these lists, they are persenting presented with t several additional words. in this case we will say this additional words were blanket and cherry. Neither of these words was on the original list. People will claim correct that the blanket was not in the original list. theywill also claim incorrectly that the word cherry was on the list. Most people are conviced they heard the word cherry on the original list. why do they make such a simple mistake? well we think because the words are on the lists were so closely relatd . the brain stromstored only the gist what they heard. For example, that all the items on the list were types of foodfruit. When we tap on memory, our brains often fiill in details and quite of often these details are actully faulse we also see this fill in phenomenon with percetion. Percetion is the faculty that allows us to process information in the present as we take it invia our senses again study will show fill in information that they thought they perceive even when they didn’t. For example, experience has been done when a person hears the sentence but the missing the word that logicaly complete it. that they will claim to hear that word even thougt we necessity it was never said. so if I want to say that sun rise in the and then fill complete the setence people will often claim to hear the word east
in cognitive scicology we have a phrase for us kein
this kind of inaccurate detal it is calld a bline sport the term originally refer to the place in our eyes where the nerve connets to the back of the eye to the eye to the brain they are no photo receptor in the area where the near con to the eye so that perticular particular area of the eye is incapable of
detecting images. it produce a bline spot in our field devision. we are aware of it because the brain fills in what the things belong in the imagine
images so the picture always appear complete to us but the term bline spot has also take in on a
more general meaning.
it refers people being unware of a bias that may affect
the judgment about the subject and the same blind spot phenomenon that afect the memory and percetion also affacts imagination. imagination is a faculty that some people use to anticipate future events in their lives but the eas which can lead to unrealistic aspetation can bias our decition. So peter suppose I ask you to imagine a lunch salad no problem, right? But I bet you imagine specific ingredience did yours have tamatos, onion lettuce mine did our brain fill in all source of details that might not be part of ther peropel imaginb pf salad
which could lead to disappointment for us if the next time we order the salad in the resteraunt we have a imagine salad in mind that is not necessarily what we will get on our plate the problem is not we imagine things but that we assume what we imagine is accurate. we should be aware that all the imagination has this built in feather the bline spot which make our predictions
fall short for sure of reality.

这两天咋就我一人??
TPO14L3
Biology class
Almost all animals have some ways of regulating their body temperature. otherwise they wouldnt survive extreme hot or cold conditions sweting hentingsweating panting swimming to cooler water dukinducking into somewhere cool like a borror burror or hole intounder the rock.
this is
these are just a few. and that is but it is colder or warmer than the surrounding evironment because it’s a micro climate. a micro climate is a group of climate conditions that affects local localized area.
whether features like temperture wind moisture and so on
and when I said localize I mean really localize beacause micro climate can be as the name suggest
s pretty small
even less than a square meter and micro climate are affected by huge number of other variables. obivous
lywearther conditions surronding areas factor but other aspects of the location like the elevation of the land or plant life near by and so on have substantial affact effect on micro climate and of couse the human development in the area or rollroad will affect by under bya a nearby micro climate.
it is also intereting to know that micro climate near each other can have very different conditions in the forest for example that can be a number of very different micro climate close to each because of variable I just mention
ed

So how does the hole in the ground a berrowburror stay cool in the hot climate?
Well since cool areair sinks and its
are shading
these spots are shaded. they are usually much cooler than the surrounding area and thusthese spots are so important beacause many animals rely on climates to regulate their body temperture. for instance there is a specie of squrrelsquirrel in the western part of the united state they can get really hot when they are out foraging for food so they need a way to cool down so what would they do they go back to the borrorburror once they get there their body temperature
decrease very very quikly the trip to the borror prevent the squirrel from getting too hot

But squirrels are mammals, right
I though mammals regulate temperature internally
Mammals do have the ability to regulate their body temperature but not all can do it to the same degree or even the same way. Like when you walk outside on a hot day you perspire and your body cools itself down, a classic example how mammal regulates its own body temperature but one challenge that the squirrel face is that because their size sweatting will make them lose too much moisture they dehydrate. but on the other hand, their small size allows them to fit in to very tiny spaces.so for small mamamls micro climate can make a big difference. they rely on micro climate for survival
So cold blood animal like reptiles they cannot control their own body temperature,so I can imagine the affect that the micro climate will have on them
Yes many reptile insects rely on micro climate to control their body temperature
a lot of reptile
s use borro or stay under rocks to cool down of couse with reptile it is abebalancing act

Staying in the heat for too long can lead to problems but staying in the cold can do the same so reptiles have to really percise about where they spend their time even how them precisionthey position their bodies
And what I say their percise I mean it some sakes will search out the place under rock of specific
thickness because too thick a rock does
not
keep them cool enough and too thick a rock will cause them to get too cold. that level of precision is cretical to the snake for maintaining its body temperature and even micro sauo organism rely on micro climate to
for survival. think about this deep composing leaves create a heat that warm soil that warm soil intern in turn affects the growth the condision of organism there and those organism affect the rate of deep composition of the leaves so
a micro climate can be something so small and so easily to stem
disturbed even tiny change have a big impact if some one on the hike knocks a couple of rocks over, they couldn’t be unwittingly destroying a micro climate that an animal or organism relysrelies on.

Conversation
Hi steve I schedule this appointment cause it a while since we touch debatesthis I know I have been very busy a friend of mine works on the school paper he asked me if l like to try reporting so I did I really love it
the first article I wrote. it was the profile of a chemistry professor the one who is
whose name the teaching of teacher the year my article ran on the front page when I saw my name my byline in print I was hockhooked now I know this is what I want to do, be a reporter isnt it geart to discover something that you really enjoy

And I read the article too to be honest the article got lots of editing in fact I barely recognized a couple of pragraphs but the editor explain why the changes were made I learn a lot and my second article need nearly many changes
sounds
like you really get neck of it
Sound like you really got a neck for this.
Anyway I glad you schedule this meeting cause I want to change my major to journalism now

en the university does not offer a major in journalism oh on but I mean shall I transfer to another school or major in english? well wait a minute. let me explain why the major isnt offered. editors of newspapers I mean when you apply for a reporting job editors look at two things. they want to see clicksclips you know some of your published articles though they also want to try out though give you an assignment like covering the a press conference or some other events then see if you can craft the story about it accurately on deadline.
so they don’t look at my major it not they dony look at it .well having a degree or something other than in journalism should actually work your advantages.
most
journalism specialized these days they only write about science or business or technology for exmaple. is there a type of reporting you may like to specialize then? I think it is cool to cover the supreme court their decisions affect so many people that is a really a goal worth striving for . so why not continue major in political science and as an elective you could take some pre law classes like constitutionlaw and as for your work in a student newspaper may be they like you to cover some local coacourt cases once students and professors would like to read about it. do you know of any? I do actully. There is a case involving this computer software program that one of our professor wrote the district cor decised decide in if that the university entitle to any of the professor‘s profit .
I will definetely follow up on that.

Ok last time we talked about ancient agricultural civilizations that observed the stars and then use those obsivations to keep
tract the desictions
seasons
but today I want talk about the importance about the stars early seafarer about how the fix pattens of stars were used navigationaly
navigational aids ok if you allyou’ve all
heard about the prior
were quite possibliy the world ‘s greatest navigators. long before the development of the advanced navigational tour to
tool in europ

Parcific alitherislanders from newzeland to Hawayii and back again
using nothing but the start as the navigate instrument the key to the Parcific a succed is probabley
that their location near the equater what that meant was that disguid could be partision devided up
much more symachally
symmetrically than it could father than the equator away cemetually that unlike the vikings early observer of the stars and polineaPolynesia or really anywhere along the equater would feel they were at the very center of things waswith the skies to the north and the skies to the south behavioring identically
they can see stars going straing
straight up in the east and strai
ght down in the west so it is easiler to discern the order in the sky to thethan father north or father south where every thing will seem more acorticchaotic.
take the case of gubui
Gilbert island they are part of polynesia
and lie very close to the eaqutor and the people there were able to divide the sky into s
emetricalsymmetrical boxes according to the main directions north east south or west.and
they can presicely describe the location
of the star by indicating its position in one of those the magaberingimaginary boxes and they realize that you had to know the stars in order to navigate in fact that is only one world for both
to when you to start expert you ask for inavigator eh islander is the small over the pracific learn to use the stars from navigation and they pass the knowledge down from generation to generation some of them utilized the stone structure called stone canoes and this canoes were on land of course and you can still see them on some islands today
persodon is the Thery were positioned as if they were heading on the sea of the horizon where certain star apeaer and disapeaerappear and disappear during the night and young would be navigators set by the stone at night and turn in different directions
to memorize they sae so they can navigator by them and recognize them and navigate by them later on when they one
went out to the sea one important way
polynesia had for orientating themselves
was by using zenith stars as zenith star was a really bright star that would pass derectly over head at a particular distantce from the equator. often a latitude associate with some particular parcific island so the pi can estimate the latitue just by looking strainght up. By observing the zenith star pasing
passed directly in the sky they know they wiill get to the latitue the will try to get to

Well another teachnology by the polyneia that is two starts rise at the same time or set at the same time and navigator could use this pair of starts as reference points because they rise or set to gether only at
specific latitude
so navigator may see one star
pair setting together want and would know how far north or the south equator they were and they wil kept on going and the next nightthey saw the setting stars seperately then they would know that they would at the different degree of latitude so looking at rise and seting star pair is a good technech actully they can be watched in setinstead of try to guess when they will rise

Ok I I think all this shows that navigating does not require fancy navigational instrumentthe prople per are centeny anstronony experte as wel as navigation that they were able to navigate to strachthe people of the pacific island had such expert knowledge of astronomy as well as navigation that they were able to navigate over vast stretches of Open Ocean.it is even possible that Polynesian navigator had already sail to the Americas centuries before Columbus.

今天开始!!!

TPO 1 L1
A: Hi,I really hope you can help me
B: that's why I'm here. what can I do for you?
A: I’d supposed to do a literature review for my psychology course, but I'm having a hard time finding articles.I don't even to konw where to start looking
B: You said it's(this’s) for your psychology course, right? so you focus is on
A: dreaming interpretation
B: well, you have a focus.so that's already a good start. em...there're few things.. oh..wait..have you checked your professor put any materials for you to look at on reserve
A: that's one thing I did konw to do.I just copied the(an) article, but i still need three more on my topic from three different journals
B: that's(let’s) get you going on looking for those things(then). we have printed version of 20 years psychology journal and(in the) Reference Section. this one was(there are the ones) published within last year. now let me(then I) think about it.there's a journal named sleeping(sleep and) dreams
A: the article i just copied from that journal.so I have got to look another(at other) sources
B:OK. actually, most of our materials are available electronically, you can access psychology databases or electronic journals and article through the library's computers.and if you want to search by title with the word dream for example, just type it in,and all the articles with dream in the title will come up in(on the screen).
A:cool.that's great.too bad I can not do this at(from) home
B: but you can't(can). all of the library’s databases and electronic sources can be accessed through any computer connected to the university network
A:really.I can't believe I didn't know that. It stiil sounds like it gonna(is going to) take a while though ... you konw, going through all of that information, all of that sources
B:maybe. but you are(already) narrow your search down to articles in(on) dream interpretation. so it shouldn't be too bad.and you probably notice that there's an
abstract
or there are a summary on the top of the first page of article you copied. when you go into the databases and electronic resources, you have the option to display the abstracts on the computer screen. Skimming those to decide whether or not you want to read the whole article should cut down some time.

A:right. abstracts. That(they) will definitely make the project more durable. I guess I should try out the electronic search while l I still here then. you know, just in case
B:sure, that computer’s free over there, and I will be here till five this afternoon
A: thanks,I feel a lot better about this assignment now.
