Undoubtedly, written books still records more tender and teeny tiny emotions and thoughts of the recorders which can not be easily presented by the video camera, although the video camera provides an accurate and convincing record of contemporary life. However, not all of us are professional on recording by video camera, besides, the simplicity and practicability of the writing enables written words be the priority to vast majority, even those video makers. Thus the speaker's assertion the video camera has become a more important form of documentation than written records needs to be contextualized to fit the given situation.
Admittedly, the video camera plays an important role because its comprehensiveness. Documentary movies takes us to the places where the history happened with professional comment as well as authentic pictures and videos, which can not attained by the written records; the documentary movies impresses us in a way that written records will never do. However, as we applaud the coming and widely using of the video technology, most people seems to emphasize too much on the video records thus the significance of the written words in given field is somehow being ignored.
Socrates said book is his best friend. I suppose even if he lives in present society where video camera is popular, he still thinks book is his best friend. Why? Because written books provides the video cameras can not provide. In literature, writers records their emotions and thoughts immediately when they catch them, even the most exquisite emotion could be written down and although many worldwide famous stories are re-performed in movie theaters and no matter how skillful the directors and the actors and actresses are, the trivial emotions still can not be expressed as delicate as in the original novels. The stream of consciousness is a literary technique that presents the thoughts and feelings of a character as they develop. In the female writer Virginia Woolf's novel Madam Delaware, (Virginia Woolf, a forerunner in stream of consciousness) when I am reading it I could clearly feel the stream of the thoughts of the character just as the way the writer recorded every detail of the character's feelings and emotions. Maybe a new kind of movie technique which could amplify this flew of emotions will be created in the future, but now the excellence of the conscious stream is still of great significance today.
Although the video is the final production that presented to the public but usually, the first step in shooting is writing down your thoughts on the paper and then translate the written language into video language as we are used to the writing for so long, so when one thing comes to mind, people usually write them down or find existing written records, with these written records, we put our thoughts into video form. Generally speaking, a written script is thought to be the basic foundation of the movie. A written script, which could be an original novel or the director group creates by them, provides the basic plot, a determining factor of a movie. Without a basic written script, a movie can not be made.
In sum, as the speaker states although the video camera provides a brand new as well as a popular form of recording, but as my opinions mentioned above, the video camera can not do as exquisitely as in depicting the emotions and thoughts of the characters in the literature field. Moreover, even though the video are popular in present society, but most video production are made based on the written records. Thus the speaker's statement needs to be contextualized to be correct. |
