The following appeared in a letter to the editor of a newsletter on health issues.
"For the past decade, most health experts have advised teenagers to avoid eating greasy foods in order to prevent acne and related skin conditions, but the number of teenagers who sought medical help for these skin problems has actually risen over the same period. In a recent study, teenagers who avoided greasy foods for a month reported approximately as many outbreaks of acne and related skin conditions as did those who ate an average of two servings of greasy food per day. Such data indicate that eating greasy foods is unlikely to be a cause of acne and related skin conditions. Therefore, health experts should no longer recommend that people avoid such foods."

In this letter the writer claims that avoiding people from greasy food are invalid in preventing acne and related skin conditions. To support his conclusion, the writer points out that the number of teenagers who use medicine to cure their skin problems has risen. He also cites a study which he thinks indicates that the condition of teenagers’ skin has nothing to do with greasing food. Careful examination of this supporting evidence, however, reveals that it lends little credible support to the writer’s claim.
First of all, the writer points out that the number of teenagers who sought medical help for these skin problems are risen over the period, he believes this risen number is the direct result of what experts suggest that greasing food can lead to skin problems are totally invalid. However, he fails to notice a crucial premise that those teenagers who are investigated should have obey what expert said. If those teenagers didn’t take the expert advice, and eat a lot of greasing food, the comparison are totally meaningless
Even if those teenagers take the expert’s advice, this number can’t prove the writer’s conclusion. The number is dubious for the reason that time have been past for some periods, the people who were investigated perhaps are far different from those who investigated before. With the time goes by, teenagers living habits could make a huge difference. For example, with the advent of information era, computers have taken place of many traditional entertainments become teenagers’ favorite pastimes and radiation generates from which may play an important part in people’s skin condition. In that case, the growing number of teenagers who have skin problems may be resulted from many other reasons. After all, the number can’t prove the invalidation in preventing acne or other skin problems of avoiding eating greasing food.
The recently study that the writer has cited is unconvinced too. Firstly, whether the teenagers in two groups are in the same scope of age? What if the teenagers of former group are all in their puberty, so even if they didn’t have any greasing food acnes were still messing with them because they are in the period that hormones play an important part in their skin problem. What if the teenagers of latter group have a good hygienic habit while the former group are all naughty children that they don’t really care about their personal hygiene which lead them many outbreaks of acne or other related skin problems.
In conclusion, the writer has not convinced me that avoiding greasing food can’t help avoid acne or other related skin problems. To better strengthen the argument, the writher should provide dear evidence not simply cited the evidence which is far from convinced.
