The following appeared in a memorandum from a dean at Omega University.
"Fifteen years ago, Omega University implemented a new procedure that encouraged students to evaluate the teaching effectiveness of all their professors. Since that time, Omega professors have begun to assign higher grades in their classes, and overall student grade averages at Omega have risen by thirty percent. Potential employers apparently believe the grades at Omega are inflated; this would explain why Omega graduates have not been as successful at getting jobs as have graduates from nearby Alpha University. To enable its graduates to secure better jobs, Omega University should now terminate student evaluation of professors."


In this argument, the arguer cites the evidence that the graduates from Omega have not been as successful at getting jobs as have graduates from nearby Alpha University, based on which he assumes that this phenomenon due to the new procedure implemented by Omega which encouraged students to evaluated the teaching effectiveness of all their professors and lead professors assigned higher grades in their class which are thought inflated by potential employers. Hence, the arguer draws the conclusion that to enable its graduates to secure better jobs, Omega University should terminate student evaluation of professors. The evidence presented throughout the argument, however, is unreliable and hence does not lead strong support to what the arguer claims.

First of all, the arguer takes it for granted that potential employers believe the grades at Omega are false and hence turn down the opportunity for graduates from Omega University to enroll in their company. However, it’s often not the case, when a company evaluates an employee grades are only a very small part of the aspects, let alone the arguer has not any evidence to support this assumption. Furthermore, there are much more important factor that a company should take into consideration when evaluate an employee, such as the working ability of the employee and does the employee have a good sense of communication and so forth. It is too subjective for the arguer to make the assumption that the grades definitely be the only reason that lead graduates become unsuccessful at getting jobs.

The intention of implement the new procedure is to improve professors teaching effectiveness through taking the feedback of students. By this means, professors will be aware of their shortcomings in teaching process and somehow adopt a better way of passing down knowledge. There is no evidence indicate that the grades assigned by professors are inflated. It is more likely that through the new procedure, professors improved their teaching methods hence makes it easier for students to absorb knowledge which result in an average improvement in students’ grades. Apparently the arguer needs more cogent evidence to prove his subjective conclusion about students’ grades.


In addition, there are multiple reasons for the graduates of Omega have worse situation in hunting jobs than Alpha University. For example, majors in Omega University may be less practical than which in Alpha University, and there is a chance that students who were enrolled in Alpha University are originally in a higher educational level that whom in Omega. What’s more, the arguer can’t exclude the possibility that Alpha University also adopted this evaluation procedure.

As it stands, the arguer fails to establish a causal relationship between teaching evaluation procedure and the situation in applying jobs for graduates in Omega University. I would suspend my judgment about the credibility of the recommendation until the arguer can provide concrete evidence that the professor evaluating systems hinder the opportunities for graduates securing better jobs.
