I concede with the speaker that the study of history has value to the extent that is relevant to our daily lives, but some of the study irrelevant to our daily lives has precious value as well. Whether the study of history is valuable depends on its educational purposes rather than its relativity to our daily lives.

The study of history relevant to our daily lives has great value because we can directly learn how to deal with problems in our daily lives. Our lives seem to be based on the experience from our ancestors, and studying history is an effective way to learn the experience from former people in order to live a better life. Without learning the history of cooking, we could hardly make delicious meals with various ingredients which have been tried by our ancestors. While without knowing the history of money, it might be difficult for us to establish the whole currency system today, and hardly could the economy develop.

However, the value of historical study is not determined by its relativity to daily lives. Since we learn experience from former people in order to better our lives, It is said that the purpose of education actually decides whether the history we study is valuable or not. Even those researches irrelevant to our daily lives seem precious to inspire and teach us.

Firstly, the study of history could probably spark our inspiration and interest when we study or work. As studying those important scientists in the history like Einstein, Edison, Newton, Copernicus and so forth, we could be profoundly encouraged by their talent and diligence in scientific researching and inspired by their achievements. For example, Apple, regarded as one of the most successful companies in the modern world, gets its name and logo mostly by the inspiration of the famous apple of Newton which symbolizes intelligence. Besides, many students become interested in learning physics, mathematics and chemistry by the studying of those eminent scientists, which will probably influence their future careers and ultimately benefit our whole society.

Secondly, we can learn from the mistakes made by people in the history to avoid duplicating the same mistakes, and consequently improve the whole society. Take World War II as an example. After World War I, the victorious countries imposed a severe and cruel Versailles Treaty on the Germany, which finally contributes to World War II. By learning the lessons from the tragic results, the allied countries did not repeat the mistakes but help Germany realize its democracy and economic prosper. Certainly these policies and actions did not relate to our daily lives directly, they indisputably guarantee us a peaceful environment and more opportunities for developing economy rather than international conflicts. Without these efforts, we may still suffer a lot from wars and conflicts.

In sum, whether the study of history is valuable or not depends on its educational purposes rather than its relativity to our daily lives. If the historical events or people could inspire us in our study and work or teach us avoid duplicating historical mistakes, which in turn educate people and benefit the society, then they are of great value and worth profoundly studying no matter they are relevant to our daily lives or not.
