TOPIC: ISSUE51 - "Education will betruly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individualneeds and interests of each student."

Effective Education

Will our education be really effective ifthe individual needs and interests of each student are meted? Absolutely no.Consider the mounting tasks for educators to do likewise, let alone theunmatured values of most student, whatever effective is defined, this notionhardly can appeal to the masses, included me.

Effective education, by its definition, means nurturing students, conducive to the society, with the limited resources offaculties and facilities. To be human is the primary goal of education, followed then by mastering various skills to survive and devote to the societyas well.

Admittedly, in a democratic society, theindividual needs and interests of each one deserve paying attention. So dostudents'. If felt be esteemed, students are inclined to demonstrate greatenthusiasm for studying and be positive to improve their other ability. Thusthe atmosphere of class is highly active, and teachers typically can bemotivated to impart their knowledge fully to pupils. With each participant ofthe class works hard to his/her potential, the education process will be trulyeffective.

Nonetheless, given the ratio of students toeducators in typical schools, it would be hard-pressed, if not impossible, forteachers to get the psychological needs and interests of each student. Becauseto accomplish the goal, a substantial sum of money is needed to invest onresearching the diverse needs and interests of students, and analyzing each toinstruct them respectively. At the same time, it's required for each educatorsto be somewhat expert in sensing the inner needs of pupils in order not to offensethe taboos and satisfy the fancy of them. What a ridiculous picture! Is itreally the speaker's desirable consequence?

The function of education, precisely, isnot merely imparting truth, but also to instruct each student to differentiatebetween various values and develop appropriate one, to realize human’sresponsibility as a certain role in the society, to learn the skills to survivein ever more competitive world. Lacking essential experience, pupils areinclined to get lost in a vast pool of information and easily be misled by somevicious-motivated people. What can teachers do when the pupils require to abatethe study time and change the learning material into some popular thing in thetime, which cannot last long and do little help to their growth? In such case, how can the educators allow themselves to follow up those needs, risking thestudents going astray at the end? On the contrary, they should flatly refusethe fancy and fulfill their obligation to nurture the students, whosecapacities determine the future. Thus instruction inevitably will offense someindividuals' needs and interests.

To sum up, we do need to take the studentsneeds and interests seriously, whether justifiable or unjustifiable. It's theeducators’ obligation to differentiate between them and decide which to cultivateand which to strangle. After all, to foster each student to his/her fullest potentialrather than cater to his/her interests or needs, is the education’s primarytask..
