Issue-51"Education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student."
Will the education be truly effective only by specially designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student? The author claims that it is important to meet the individual needs of each student. Of course it is proper to take the needs and interests of each student into account, however, the author overstates that the importance of student's needs and interests, at the same time, the author overstates the specially designing.
First of all, the needs and interests are essential to students. If the education can take the account of the individual needs and interests, it will be scientific and beneficial in respect that it can help the students to develop their own potential and talent. Teaching students in accordance with their aptitude let them to realize the wealth within them, and spark the students to study. In addition, the purpose of education is foster various talents for the society and the students may not make contributions to the development of society on condition that the education system does not pay attention to the meet the personal needs and interests. For instance, Einstein didn't get good scores when he was young, yet he studied for his interests and finally founded the theory of relativity.
Although the needs and interests are significant for the students, it is unfeasible when we specifically make the educational plan and distribute the educational resources on the basis of each students' interests and needs, since to meet the interests and needs of each student, which means more teachers, more teaching program, and more money are needed, will bring an immense cost of money and public sources which can be used to address the immediate social problems such as poverty that our society cannot afford.
As far as the necessity of proposition, even if the educational resources are sufficient to meet the individual needs and interests, it is unnecessary and, in a way, noneffective to do it, in respect that inordinate concerning about the needs and interests of each student may bring a negative impact on the students. Since the purpose of education is foster talents with comprehensive development, if we teach the students totally to meet the interests and needs of students, the student will not lay a firm foundation of basic knowledge and skills and the students are unable to survive in the society without the foundation of knowledge and skills, let alone the contributions to the society. Therefore, it is more determinative to take comprehensive consideration to design the education system than narrowly concerning the personal interests and needs.
Last but not the least, specifically designed education should not take the place of traditional education and it is sensible to make a balance between them. For example, the school can set required courses to ensure the studies on the basic knowledge and morality, at the same time set elective courses chosen by students themselves to develop their different interests and satisfy their distinct needs. As a result, the student can lay a firm foundation of the basic knowledge as well as build up their distinct needs and interests.
In the final analysis, I admit that it is essential to specifically design the education to meet the individual needs and interests. However, it is unapt to overstate the importance of the specially designing. In my view, we should take an all-sided consideration and seek a balance between the traditional education and specially designed education. |
