Issue outline
16"Although many people think thatthe luxuries and conveniences of contemporary life are entirely harmless, infact, they actually prevent people from developing into truly strong andindependent individuals."
  • The eager to possessing     luxuries and comfortable lives can always provoke people to work harder.
  • Fortitude in minds and     distinguished individuals are acquired through experience and training     rather than arduous environment, although poor conditions always evoke     persons’ enthusiasm.
  • Technological advancement     can bring in convenience and higher efficiency for contemporaries. Then,     we spend more time or energies on the essential and significant issues.     The people spend most parts of their lives on survival will consequently not     devote to improvement of human beings.
  • On the other hand,     external material circumstance could just be the subordinate element to decided     what kind of people you will be.

25"Anyone can make things biggerand more complex. What requires real effort and courage is to move in theopposite direction—in other words, to make things as simple as possible."
  • The wise must be the one     who can simplify the complex things.
  • Some would like to make     things bigger and more complex to show their profound knowledge in the     fields. This phenomenon wastes taxpayers’ money each year. Some     politicians are so zealous for constructions to show off their     achievements.
  • Simply means less cost and     more efficient.
  • In order to make things     simple, we have to do more efforts.

13"Many of the world'slesser-known languages are being lost as fewer and fewer people speak them. Thegovernments of countries in which these languages are spoken should act toprevent such languages from becoming extinct."
  • Government don’t have to     waste so many funds to prevent languages, which are on the verge of     disappear.
  • The function of language     is communication. Its value loses along with the circumstance that no one uses     it.
  • Different in languages are     the biggest obstacle for people to understand each other.
  • The reason for extinct of     the language is likely that it is not conform to the development of the     society.

Argument Outline:
14Thefollowing appeared in a memo from the owner of Green Thumb Gardening Center, asmall business serving a suburban town.

"There is evidence that consumers are becoming more and more interested ingrowing their own vegetables. A national survey conducted last month indicatedthat many consumers were dissatisfied with the quality of fresh vegetablesavailable in supermarkets. And locally, the gardening magazine Great Gardenshas sold out at the Village News stand three months in a row. Thus, we at GreenThumb Gardening Center can increase our profits by greatly expanding thevariety of vegetable seeds we stock for gardeners this coming spring."
1. Interest makes a great distinction with activities.
2. Consumers dissatisfied with the quality of freshvegetables. But this doesn’t mean they would love to plant by themselves.Further investigation should be made to figure out the proportions of this kindof people.
3. We have no ideas about the contents of the magazine. Itmay focus on the flowers but not vegetables that contribute it so popular.
4. It is impossible for most of the citizens to plantvegetables because of lacking spaces.
5. The market may be depressed.

------------------------------

15The following appeared in anewsletter offering advice to investors.

"Over 80 percent of the respondents to a recent survey indicated a desireto reduce their intake of foods containing fats and cholesterol, and todaylow-fat products abound in many food stores. Since many of the food productscurrently marketed by Old Dairy Industries are high in fat and cholesterol, thecompany's sales are likely to diminish greatly and their profits will no doubtdecrease. We therefore advise Old Dairy stockholders to sell their shares andother investors not to purchase stock in this company."
1.The respondents for the survey should be analyzed in order to assure me tobelieve the statistical result. Without evidence that the respondents’ desiresare representative of those of the overall population where OD products aresold, it is hasty to draw any conclusions about the food buying habits from thesurvey.
2. Consumptions may have nothing to do with the desiresof consumers.

------------------------------

16The following appeared in a letter to the editor of a local newspaper from acitizen of the state of Impecunia.

"Two years ago our neighboring state, Lucria, began a state lottery tosupplement tax revenues for education and public health. Today, Lucria spendsmore per pupil than we do, and Lucria's public health program treats far morepeople than our state's program does. If we were to establish a state lotterylike the one in Lucria, the profits could be used to improve our educationalsystem and public health program. The new lottery would doubtless besuccessful, because a survey conducted in our capital city concludes thatcitizens of Impecunia already spend an average of $50 per person per year ongambling."
1.Lucria lottery may not the reason for their better education and public health.
2. People would not love the lottery in Impecunia eventhey spend lots on gambling.
3. Lottery can bring in society problems.
