"In most professions and academic fields, imagination is more important than knowledge."
It is argued that imagination has played a crucial role in expediting the progress of human civilization. Without imagination it is certainly impossible for us to advance in the fields of science and art. Yet I believe it may be somewhat extreme(presumptuous 这个词替换extreme 咋样) to assert that imagination is definitely more important than knowledge, as history has demonstrated that imagination would just become fruitless without profound understanding of existing knowledge. Only when innovative thoughts or theories are congruous with current knowledge then it is more likely than human beings could benefit from such novelty.
It is an undeniable fact that imagination is one of the determining factors of our human civilization. Without imagination the development of natural science would become unrealistic(many of our modern equipment and advance technology would never be invented). We may still live in primitive rural villages with no electricity or Internet.(这一个例子感觉不是很贴切,这个是科技的作用,不是imagination的作用。Take verne, the founding father of science fiction as an example, his imagination about an voyage in balloon and a cruise in a submarine are both eventually come true) When Sir Isaac Newton invented the fundamental theories of calculus and the famous laws of motion, it was his imagination that allowed him to bring mathematics into a new era(我换个例子你看好不好:when Wright Brothers devised the first airplane in a world full of contempt and laugh, it is their imagination and unremitting efforts that allowed them finally succeed.). Besides science, imagination also plays an important role(more crucial role) in the field of art. (without imagination, there would be no art)Monet first used the creative skill in portraying light and founded Impressionism. Decades later another great painter Pablo Picasso led painting to a new stage by his incredible works of surrealism.(在提这些例子时,里面都加个imagination是不是能更有力的支撑,不然感觉例子和论点关系不强烈the great German composer Beethoven who was entirely deaf by 1819, created 9 symphonies, 5 piano concertos. Without his imagination, we could never enjoy his great music.) Undoubtedly, without the imagination of those masters, advancement in painting would be improbable.
However, it would be immature to credit imagination solely without considering the importance of mastering existing knowledge. Knowledge is a collection of intelligent thoughts and ideas of our ancestors, and the value of knowledge can never be overestimated. Numerous cases in history have proved that imagination with no through consideration in current knowledge can be futile and useless. Centuries ago there had been great zeal of inventing the perpetual motion. Thousands of talented scientists invested uncountable hours trying to build a machine that could move without any outside power supply. Yet after a long time none of them succeeded. Obviously, imagination is not what they lack. It is the knowledge in physics that has predetermined their failure. In front of the framework of classical physics, where perpetual motion is proved impossible, such imagination is just powerless.(这个例子很NB) On the other hand, if one’s creative thinking is rooted from knowledge, then his success is foreseeable. For example, James Maxwell is considered one of the greatest physicists in history due to his ingenious achievement in the study of electromagnetism. His Maxwell Equations are the foundation of that area. Yet it is worth noting that Maxwell equations are not completely. What Maxwell did was just inventing a holistic system that incorporated separate findings and experiment results from previous scientists. His work also requires imagination, but knowledge is also what he needed to accomplish that cornerstone of electromagnetism. (it is well known that Kekule, a famous chemist, find out the structure of benzene when he was dreaming. However, it would be impossible for him to arrive this great conclusion without his accumulated knowledge) (感觉Maxwell 的例子有点长,没有必须叙述太多与主旨无关的内容)
In conclusion, imagination does play a crucial role in many professional and academic fields. Yet we should not discredit the importance of knowledge as the foundation of imagination. In many cases, pure imagination would not provide and meaningful work, unless it is congruent with existing knowledge.
我水平不高,但是是很认真改的,呵呵。
楼主的论述比较流畅,比我写的好多了。
