TOPIC: ISSUE73 - "In most professions and academic fields, imagination is more important than knowledge."
WORDS: 479 TIME: 00:45:00 DATE: 2011/4/5 15:26:01
Since the stories of a variety of scientists who have made great contributions to the society become more and more popular thanks to media coverage, some people have found that those geniuses have one point in common: imagination. Because of that, they say, imagination is the source of success, no matter it is in the fields of professions or sciences.
【虽然引出了题目,但我觉得第一段还是要写清自己的position】
Admittedly, imagination plays a vital role in the advancement of science and technology. Think of the Wright brothers, who had imagined flying like birds for a long time before they invented the first airplane. Even in the field of modern physics, which certainly requires intensive carefulness and accuracy, imagination is still vital in making breakthroughs. For example, if Albert Einstein hadn't imaged what would happen if he traveled at the speed of light when he was 18 years old, there would be far more years to go before someone else imaged the scene and propose the Theory of Relativity. Imagination, in a way, is the very instinct of human beings, and is the propeller for man to delve into the ocean of science.
【例子不错】
However, despite the legendary imagination known to the public through the anecdotes of scientists, the more common imagination we have in reality rarely does more than knowledge to the benefits of the society, and I call it "pure imagination", which is a synonym of reverie.
To further explain, take the example of physics again, where imagination is important but can be inhibitive as well. Before Galileo, few people had disagreed on the statement that an object could move because of a force that was exerted on it. Because this statement was proposed by Aristotle, a prominent philosopher in ancient Greece, it had dominated the academic field for thousands of years. However, the fact is, Aristotle argued so simply because he observed that an object could move after a force was exerted, and he imagined that the force was the reason why it moved regardless of the causality.
Today, most people know that a force actually changes an object's status of movement, instead of being the momentum of it. That's because of the knowledge of Newton's Laws of Physics, which is a negation of Aristotle's pure imagination, an objective and logical method of observing the world, and a real propeller of technology.
【这个例子感觉不是特别契合,把Aristotle的想象等同于reverie好像有点牵强。要么可以适当的调整下语气,写的较为客观点】
Furthermore, in professional fields, knowledge is conspicuously more important than imagination. Numerous examples include analysts, accountants, managers, etc., and what they really do is to create value rather than thinking it up, and they know this process involves much knowledge as well as practice. Imagination, in this sense, is only auxiliary.
【更加具体点会更好】
Therefore, while we can't deny the importance of imagination, what the world today really needs is the solid knowledge by which it runs routinely and smoothly and some imagination, to retouch what people have done or and provide them with something to perform better. |
